Helping Gwen Garth, and Kings & Queens of Art
Donation protected
Gwendolyn Garth is a native Clevelander, a multimedia artist of African descent, and a Community Activist. She is an avid champion for marginalized artists, and seeks to discover and create doors of opportunities, and show others those doors also and bring them through with her.
Before the pandemic, Gwen made a majority of her living through teaching art classes to the elderly and homeless through Catholic Charities in Cleveland. She also has a studio space where she creates and teaches in Glenville, that also serves as the home of Kings & Queens of Art , the nonprofit organization Gwen built. Kings & Queens of Art has a vision to transform community through the celebration of the arts and African-American, history and culture.
Like many artists, COVID-19 has significantly impacted her ability to teach regular classes and earn extra income through her studio space. In addition to a regular income stream, her main concern is of losing her studio and the home of Kings & Queens of Art.
Gwen’s life has revolved around advancing opportunity and equity in Cleveland’s art community. She is a mother and grandmother, a friend, a mentor, and a spiritual mother to many – artists and non-artists, from all walks of life. It is time for us as a community to come together and rally around Gwen’s vision, support her as she spends her days supporting others, and help her make it through these times!
Our goal for this campaign is to raise $5,000 in community support. This will cover 3 months of rent and utilities for Gwen’s art studio, as well as cover some operating expenses for Gwen to reinvent Kings & Queens of Art’s programming to continue to build a network of artists & resources that supports a vibrant arts environment, in a neighborhood context in these new times.
