My son Garion was recently hit by a van while exiting a friends vehicle and crossing the road toward a park in billings. His injuries include road rash on his chest and back, a dislocated hip, and pelvis that was broken i 2 places near the sacrum.  The doctors say that he can recover from all of these injuries as long as he stays in his chair and follows the proscribed rehabilitation plan.  I would like to say that I am financially in a place to help him but I am not.  He was a striving college student at Rocky Mountain college and working to move out on his own at 16. He has very clear goals and an incredibly strong will but without an ability to work he will not be able to continue on this path.  Thankfully the doctors have been able to repair the majority of the damage but he will be in a wheelchair and unable to work for the better part of a year.  Without the ability to earn an income he won't be able to pay for his basic living costs or cover his school costs.  He was planning to get his drivers license soon and a car as well with the money he was earning as a bus boy at a local restaurant and a private tutor so he could truly be independent.  He will be coming home soon and we are needing to build him a ramp and make some changes in arrangements in our home to accommodate him. Our hope is that with these funds we can get him stable and functioning in his chair over the summer so that when school starts we can have him return to school and either live with a friend that can help him or in the dorms so he can go to school and get to his physical therapy appointments.  We live 20+ miles from town where the college and physical therapy are, so having him live in town will both help him in his goal to be independent and ensure, especially in bad weather, that he can get to where he needs to be. all the funds that we receive will solely be used for the following costs.

1. $900 to get the needed materials to build a ramp at our home.
2. $$$ not sure how much for gas to travel back and forth to billings for appointments over the next few months
3. $16,000 living expenses for 8 months once school starts and before he can start working again.
4. $3000 for a car so he can have a friend drive him around  to his appointments
5. $18,000 for school costs to attend rocky mountain next year.
6. $500 for a game system and some non-violent games for Garion to play while he is recovering.
7. $800 a laptop so he can have something small and mobile to do his school work on.

I will be doing my best to cover or help with these costs.  the $28,000 mark represents what i feel will be my shortfall on this number.  I understand that as his father these costs are my responsibility and its my lack of ability to provide for him that is setting these limits on him. I simply don't want his future to be limited due to my failings in light of this emergency and as such I humbly ask that if you are able please help my son to achieve his goals during this time that he can't functionally help himself.

Thank you,
Patrick Rickard
