My name is Draya, and several years ago I made the life changing decision to have bariatric surgery. At my highest weight, I weighed 533 pounds. Through surgery, determination, and years of hard work, I have lost 372 pounds and maintained that weight loss.

Losing the weight saved my life....but my journey isn't over.

While many people assume excess skin is cosmetic, for me it is a medical issue. I have already undergone one medically necessary skin removal surgery, where over 10 pounds of excess skin was removed. Unfortunately, I still have significant excess skin on my arms and other areas that causes pain, limits my mobility, and interferes with everyday life and my career as a nurse.

As a single mom raising two children with special needs, I work hard every day to provide for my family while also helping bariatric patients through their own journeys. I know firsthand how life changing weight loss can be, but I also know the physical and emotional challenges that come after.

Despite multiple appeals, I continue to face insurance barriers for the additional medically necessary surgeries I need. The out-of-pocket cost is far beyond what I can afford on my own.
