Helping Daniel Macias in difficult times: A Call for Support

Quite a few of us will remember Daniel Macias (callsign “Boone”) from his many years of volunteering at the CAF. Boone was a Loadmaster and Flight Crew Chief on the B-17 for many years.

A couple of years ago, at only 52 years of age, his health started to decline. He got into a car accident as his diabetes had gotten out of control. Due to this one event, he lost his car, lost his job (since he no longer had transportation), lost his home (since he no longer had income), and subsequently lost custody of his children ages 11 & 14 since he no longer had a house.

He wound up homeless. He ended up "camping" in a trailer that had no air conditioning last summer when Francois Bergeon discovered his plight. By then he had a gone blind and was almost deaf.

Boone's diabetes was completely out of control and he had to have amputations and full time medical care in a home. He had many hospitalisations from falling and many other complications due to his rapidly declining health.

During this time, he had no health insurance and his medical bills have mounted up. He had nowhere to live, and no one to take care of him. A few of us volunteered to start getting him back on the road to recovery.

We were able to get his insulin levels corrected by constant medical supervision that was paid for by volunteers.

We were also able to get him a detached retina surgery and a cataract surgery on one of his eyes. This improved his ability to see light and dark. He has been declared legally blind but is medically on the road to recovery.

During this time there have been a great many bills that have occurred and we are asking if anyone who knew him and remembers him would like to donate money that will go towards all of the debts that he has incurred.

We are hoping to get him disability and Social Security sorted out but still need help on debts that have happened recently. So, we are reaching out to those who may be able to donate to relieve the burden of debt that has occurred.
