Helping Dad Live Independently Longer

Donation protected
We are Danielle and Jacquelyn Hibbert and we’re fundraising to help our Dad, Carl (78 years old), make the necessary home improvements that will keep him independent longer. These funds will go to help us pay for a few updates to his home to make it more senior-friendly: a walk-in shower, railings, grab bars and some updated lighting needs. Read more below about what got us here and why we’re in need of your support.

Dad is a proud, independent man - he owns his home, lives independently and was pushed into retirement from his truck driving career due to health issues about 10 years ago. He is on a fixed income (social security) and has limited resources available.

In 2023, my Dad began working with his doctors to find out why he was experiencing back pain, aches and pain in his legs, muscle weakness, and numbness in his foot. After nearly 9 months of appointments as well as increasing pain and weakness, we found he had some dangerous blood clots and blockage that had been the root of these issues.

During the final months of 2023, Dad missed holiday gatherings due to pain and lack of sleep while he was waiting for the final appointments that would help us find the issue. After months of sleep deprivation and pain, we were on track for surgery. Unfortunately, Dad experienced several falls at home, decreased ability to be at home on his own safely, and was finally advised to be taken to the ER.

Now, we’ve had surgery to resolve the root cause of the issue, but the work isn’t done. Dad’s still experiencing numbness, has lost a lot of muscle due to the time that this took, and will need to go through occupational and physical therapy to get back home safely.

Dad’s house hasn’t been kept up very well over the last 15 years or so, but he wants to live independently as long as possible. We’re hoping with some updates to the house, he can safely return home and we can get some additional in-home support in the future. His bathroom and lighting are the two biggest barriers to safety and we want to try and install a walk-in shower with a seat, as well as grab bars and some other safety railing needs to help him get in and out of the house safely.

We are working to identify available resources and determine what we can cover, but believe we will need still another $5,000 to get the work completed. We appreciate any support you can offer.

Sincerest thanks,
Danielle & Jacquelyn
