HELPING CANOAS and RIO GRANDE do SUL - BRAZIL
Donation protected
Hello everyone! My wife Juliana and I, Manoel Rachewiski, Brazilians residing in Airdrie, AB, will appreciate you reading this content. Our family and millions of others need our assistance more than ever.
I was born in Porto Alegre and grew up in Canoas, where my family still resides and lost everything in the floods of May 4th, along with some close friends and thousands of other people. Canoas is one of the cities most severely affected by the flooding that nearly destroyed the entire state of Rio Grande do Sul.
On top of facing imminent risks of death, they are starving, and became homeless overnight; now staying in schools, churches, and gymnasiums that have been converted into shelters. Even though hundreds of volunteers from all over Brazil are doing their utmost to fill in the gaps left by problems with government mismanagement, there is still more rain and a drop in temperature in the forecast (winter is approaching), an increase in crime and violence in the area already occurring.
Following I am sharing some of this reality:
- Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul is being inundated by its worst flooding in 80 years, killing 100 people and rendering thousands homeless. Rains are expected to persist over the weekend.
- More than 1.45 million people were affected by the floods, which have spread to 417 of the state’s 497 cities. (https://www.reuters.com/graphics/BRAZIL-RAINS/FLOODS/egpbazlzbvq/)
- Over the course of 10 days at the end of April and beginning of May, the region recorded between a third and almost half of the yearly rainfall predicted – between 500 and 700 millimetres, depending on the area, according to measurements by Metsul Meteorologia.
- On Thursday the state governor announced his first estimate of the damage : about 19billion reals (£2.9bn), which is expected to rise in the coming days and weeks.(https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/may/10/brazil-is-reeling-from-catastrophic-floods-what-went-wrong-and-what-does-the-future-hold)
We are launching this campaign because our family and friends don't have resources to rebuild their lives - house and everything inside are all lost; no insurance).
Anything helps and will be used to provide essentials like mattresses, bedding, furniture, food, water, and a temporary place to live.
** proof of all money spent with their needs will be provided
Here is their house:
