"Braxton Canada was born March 2, 2017 and was perfect in every way. There was 0 indication that something was wrong. When he was 3-4 weeks old, I noticed a little pink dot on his scalp. It literally looked like a mosquito bite. When it did not go away, I showed his pediatrician and she thought the mosquito bite/bump had calcified. Big deal. It didn't go away but didn't seem to get too much bigger until right at 3.5 months. It had went from 1.5 cm to 3cm. We then were referred to dermatology for possible dermoid cyst. After an ultrasound, we were told it was not a dermoid cyst, but that Braxton was missing a piece of his skull. We were referred to a neurosurgeon. After talking with him, we had several possibilities of what it could be but all seemed pretty safe. On July 24, we took Braxton for his MRI/CT. Afterwards, we went and did his pre-op stuff for his "one day surgery" scheduled for the next day. Then we finally went back to his neurosurgeon to get results. As soon as the doctor, his nurse and some random lady came in, I knew it wasn't good news. He started off talking about "I know when we first met I thought it was _____ or _____ and would could easily fix it. But unfortunately, your baby has a very large brain tumor that has eroded the bone and is pushing his skull up." There was alot more said... But honestly, TUMOR, POSSIBLE MALIGNANT, CHEMO.... That is what I heard. After the doctor had me call my mom to come to the office, I listened to the same words again and understood more. While Braxton's brain was growing the tumor was growing as well. The moment he started forming, he had this. There was no preventing, it was just a bad luck thing. He has no symptoms because 1) he is used to it. 2) his soft little skull is spreading to make room for it. It takes up most if not all of his left frontal lobe and extends to halfway to the top of his skull. He should not be alive, and even so, he should have some kind of deficit. His eyes track me everywhere. He can use both hands and both feet. He talks, giggles and smiles. He is hitting all his milestones. He seems like your average baby. Every doctor so far has been confused/amazed. 7/26 Braxton had a biopsy of the tumor and a central line placed. 8/3 Both pathologist agree it is some kind of sarcoma (a type of cancer in soft and connective tissue). They believe it started in his meninges, so he will have a PET scan and MRI of chest and spine 8/9 to rule out any other cancer. At this point, we know he will require agressive treatment with chemotherapy. Because of him only being 5 months old, he will most likely stay in the hospital during treatments."
