Helping Beau Heal and Supporting The Schmelz Family

Hi Everyone!

A few of us have been holding off on starting this to raise money for the Schmelz family in hopes that Beau would have been returning home by now.
Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened yet. Beau is such a strong and brave little boy for going through what he’s gone through at just under 7 years old.
While he has already overcome many obstacles, there are still several to come and a LOT of healing to do. Here is some brief information that Hanna (mom) has posted:

Day 10.
Pain. Lots of pain.

Monday: he had a small procedure to insert a drainage tube to drain the old blood pooled up in his abdomen that was seen on a CT scan over the weekend. They sent him back to the PICU due to the excessive amount draining off so quickly. He drained 2.5 liters in roughly an hours time. It was a fear this would relieve pressure on his liver too quickly.
He was relieved of pain by evening.

Tuesday:
The tube was too small and began to continuously clog. The drainage color also change and no longer was old blood. his pain returned due to fluid building up once again. They did a HIDA scan to check for bile leaks. They discovered a significant amount leaking.

Wednesday:
He underwent a 2 hour laparoscopic surgery to insert 2 additional and slightly larger drains. They also cut off fatty tissue from around his colon to place on top of his liver. The hope is for this to act as a binder to help the torn liver flaps stick back together to allow scar tissue to begin doing its thing.
Thankfully they didn’t see any sign of any active bleeding!

Today:
He is in an excruciating amount of pain due to the irritation and inflammation internally that was caused from all of the bile and old blood. They’re hoping this pain starts to ease within the next day or so.

The next goals are to get him back on his feet and eating. We are so proud of how tough his keeps proving to be. Not the way we wanted to spend our Spring Break, but we’re just thankful he’s still with us and we’ll have the chance to make up our vacation and more, in the future.

Again we thank everyone for the overwhelming amount of support, well wishes, care packages, coffee and everything in between!

Day 6

Bloodwork is looking better with the exception of his bilirubin, which is to be expected given his injury type.

Smiling, talking and playing the Xbox when the pain meds are doing their thing.. but unfortunately they’re quick to wear off and he’s back to high pain and discomfort.

He’ll be getting an additional CT Scan sometime this evening to hopefully rule out any further issues or bile leaks. Fingers crossed for good news/results!

Our tough guy has a long way to go, but he’s hanging in there! Keep the prayers coming, they’ve done wonders for him thus far. ❤️

March 13, 2026.
Monday evening Beau had a four wheeler accident… & all I can say is trust your gut. If you don’t think something is right, get your kiddos checked out. I’m so thankful we did.

He didn’t have a single scratch or visible bruise. He walked himself in the house and laid on the couch. However he was holding his side and crying in pain. He then started vomiting within minutes of the wreck… and then started turning the palest shade of white but also a grey color.
I decided to drive him to Nortons Children’s ER on Brownsboro Road.. really thinking he may have cracked a rib? Never did we imagine they’d have him checked in, triaged, FAST examined and transported by ambulance to Children’s Downtown, all within 42 minutes. He received 3 units of blood in this time also.

He had a Grade 5 liver laceration and was looking at a potentially life threatening surgery. All effort was made to avoid this surgery… but it would be a minute by minute type of monitoring to know.
He had some fluid around his heart but it’s cleared up now and his heart itself looks great. We are also very thankful that his head CT was clear. THANK GOD FOR HELMETS.

He was sent up to the PICU and monitored hourly. So many vital checks, blood draws, a CT scan, an NG tube, EKG, Echo, and ultrasounds…
Fortunately his body did what they hoped it would, and started clotting naturally. He was released from the PICU, but now remains in MedSurg, and will for an unknown amount of time to come. His heart rate has finally started to come down and maintain a more preferred rate, however now we’re struggling with his o2. They believe this is due to him being so inactive and stuck laying in bed. His adrenaline has also come down and now he’s aware of the immense pain he’s been in. He’s sleeping A LOT and isn’t talking much, but he has gotten to his feet a few times today and can walk to the restroom (with lots of support) - which was a goal! ✔️

The head surgeon made his rounds today and is feeling more confident that we’ve passed the line for the need of surgical intervention; but this isn’t guaranteed either.

His class made him get well cards and he loved Owen and I reading them to him today. We’d ask if he wanted a break and he told us to keep reading them.

He still swears his wreck “wasn’t even that bad” and that he can go home now. He’s also not lost his sarcastic personality that we all love so much.

We can’t thank everyone enough for all of the prayers, well wishes, words of encouragement and gifts we’ve received. We have an INCREDIBLE support system. ❤️
Please continue to keep not only Beau in your thoughts and prayers, but also Owen. He was the one to roll up right behind his wreck and got him back to the house to Clayton and I. He’s been the best and bravest big brother!

If you have stuck around this long to read through all of the updates on this little boy, please consider donating to The Schmelz family. Hanna and Clayton are literally living at the hospital. Hanna has been staying during the week usually so Clayton is able to work some still, then Clayton has stayed during the weekend to give Hanna some rest and allow her to spend some time with their other son, Owen.
While they still are unsure when Beau will get to return home, he will still have several follow ups and things to come as well as possibly still having the drain tubes in when he goes home.
The money raised will go straight to The Schmelz Family to help with medical bills, transportation back and forth to the hospital and help keep the lights on at home during this time of need.
Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers, so hopefully Beau can return home soon.

With love,
Rachel
