I’m asking for help during one of the hardest moments of my life as I care for my mom in hospice at home. My name is Anthony Wright, and I’m the son of Antoinette Martinez. My mom is in hospice care at home with me. She has advanced cervical cancer that has spread through her body. She is now mostly unresponsive, and I stay by her side every day making sure she is comfortable and cared for. She has a hospice team that provides medical support, but I am her main caregiver while also working night shifts. Trying to balance work, bills, and full-time care has become overwhelming. Even though Medicaid covers hospice services, there are still out-of-pocket costs for medications, co-pays, comfort supplies, and daily needs to keep her comfortable. I’ve been doing my best to cover what I can, but it has become too much to handle alone. I’m asking for help to support her care right now and to prepare for funeral arrangements when the time comes. My mom has been through a lot in her life, but she never let it harden her. She always stayed strong and kept going no matter what she was facing. She cared deeply about other people. She would go out to places like Atlantic City, spend time with the homeless, talk with people, and help in any way she could. That’s just who she is—always moving, always giving, always showing up for others. Even on her hardest days, she was still a get-up-and-go type of person who never stopped trying to help people.
