Amanda and Jeff are a proud military family who have spent years serving their country, their community, and the people around them. Now, it’s our turn to show up for them.

As many of you know, they are loving parents to three incredible kids. Earlier this year, their family was faced with an unexpected and overwhelming challenge: two of their children were diagnosed with a rare, degenerative eye condition that required urgent surgical intervention to prevent further vision loss.

What followed were months of uncertainty, difficult decisions, and an urgent race against time—filled with extensive research, cross-country consultations, and travel to find specialized providers experienced in treating children. After all of that, we are incredibly relieved and grateful to share that both surgeries were successful.

While the outcome brings immense relief, the financial impact has been significant. The most effective procedure to halt the progression of their disease has not yet received FDA approval and is not covered by insurance, including military healthcare. Waiting for approval was not an option, as any delay would have resulted in irreversible vision loss. The only alternative procedure covered by insurance was a more invasive option that was far less suitable for children. As a result, they had to pursue the uninsured procedure and pay for it entirely out of pocket. This resulted in combined costs for surgery, travel, lodging, and related medical expenses totalling approximately $15,000.
