I really don’t know where to begin and seriously debated whether to make a “go fund me” page for our brother Brett and his wife Barbara. Barbara has been battling colon cancer for over a year now and although she was told she is cancer free last September, she has developed an infection of some kind and has been in the hospital with severe edema, bedridden. Brett has been caring for his wife and best friend, being the sole provider and devoted to working and visiting Barbara every day in the hospital. Recently they had a transmission problem with their only vehicle and Brett has had to use a scooter to commute to work and to the hospital since the limited income hasn’t allowed them to repair their car.
Last Saturday after visiting Barbara at the hospital, Brett left around 4ish to get home before dark. Barbara was calling but only getting his voicemail, becoming very worried. A nurse came to Barbara’s room shortly after and told her that her husband is downstairs in the emergency room. My brother Brett was in an accident with his scooter and nobody knows how or what happened. We don’t know if it was a hit or run, if it was raining and he lost control of the scooter, nobody knows. He is in the ICU/Trauma on a ventilator and is heavily sedated. Brett suffered a fractured clavicle, severalbroken ribs, multiple abrasions all over and a lacerated spleen. They are both in the hospital at Delray Medical Center on the same floor and unable to communicate or see each other, Brett on a ventilator and Barbara unable to walk or enter the trauma wing of ICU. After being told that Brett would have the tube removed, we now are told that Brett has pneumonia and a fever, so the tube remains.
We are praying for the best, and for both to have a full recovery, at the same time, worried about what’s next and not being able to speak to Brett is frustrating and sad. Barbara is beside herself with worry for her husband as you could imagine. We are reaching out and asking for help for what is to be a long journey of recovery with limited to no income since Brett installs floors/tiles by trade and won’t be able to perform his job for who knows how long. Anything you can give could help ease the burden of keeping a roof over their head and food on their table while they focus on gaining the gift of health back. Anyone that knows Brett, knows that he is a gentle giant full of love for all and he adores his wife as she does him. They celebrated 25 years of marriage last September and are an example of two people that remain in love and best friends through all of life’s challenges. They are truly a simple and happy couple.
