Helping a Hoboken Neighbor Recover and Rebuild

A long-time neighbor in our community is working hard to rebuild his life after a recent, serious and sudden medical event, and I am reaching out for your support.

Just in his early 50's, he experienced a traumatic brain injury that upended his health, his housing, and his financial stability almost overnight. He is currently living in a nursing facility, where he has lived since the event, while continuing his recovery. The good news is that he is making real progress and is getting closer to being able to live independently again.

As part of getting back on his feet, he has been approved for housing assistance and has reapplied after a timing issue caused his initial certificate to expire before he could use it. He is working through that process now. In the meantime, he is reliant on monthly disability payments that are currently pennies while he is receiving in-patient care. Once he moves into more permanent housing, his payments will increase to better support his living costs.

He is now facing a very practical challenge.

All of his belongings - everything from his prior home - are currently in a storage unit that costs $375 per month. Without help, he risks losing those belongings, which would make it significantly harder for him to rebuild once he is able to leave the facility.

This ask is intended to be a short-term bridge. The goal is to raise $2,500, which will cover several months of storage and give him the time he needs to secure housing and transition back to independent living.

He has asked to remain anonymous. I understand that may give some pause, but I want to be clear that I have known him personally for several years and I visited him in the hospital after his brain injury. I would not be sharing this if I did not believe in both his situation and his commitment to getting back on his feet.

If you are able to contribute, even a small amount will help. And if not, sharing this would mean just as much. The amounts raised will come to me, and I will facilitate getting them to our neighbor.

Thank you for your consideration,

Tiffanie
