Marina Vasquez is a nurse. Have you ever met a nurse? Far from spending her day playing cards (as one pathetic politician quipped), nurses save lives, hold hands, bridge communications, forge connections, keep people safe...the list of their tasks and importance is endless. She embodies that role in all aspects of her life, just like we know nurses to do...generous with her heart, spirit, time and resources.
In the last two years, her humanitarian outreach has grown exponentially...so much that she was hard to track down, but also EVERYWHERE! Traveling from her home in Austin Texas to the Valley of South Texas (her birthplace) and to the refugee child detention center in Tornillo to assist in the humanitarian crisis of family separations and refugees needing support, she not only brings her nursing skills, but supplies gathered from around the state to the people needing it most. She can also be seen rallying for the rights of women, children, teachers, students, LGBTQ+ people...so many marginalized folks to support, and Marina stands for them all. She also campaigned intensively for the progressive wave that is taking hold, single-handedly opening a pop-up office for Beto O'Rourke's Senate campaign in the valley and supporting other candidates and activists with her sweet words, energy and time.
These things are not new to Marina...she has been working and advocating for the people who need it most all of her life...as many nurses do!
During this intense time, Marina's own health and self-care have faltered, which has led to a perfect storm resulting in a personal mortgage crisis. The deadline for payment is May 15th, after which the bank wants to take her house. Marina is caught needing to work insane hours in order to try to keep her home in the coming weeks, and needs our help to get through this moment. The total amount she needs is $12, 500, but feels that this is the amount she will be short. As nurses would tell us...something's got to give. Instead of letting her suffer in silence, let's throw in whatever we can to keep the wheels of generosity that she turns rolling!
Much gratitude and blessings to Marina for her compassionate activism, and to all of you for yours!
