Hi my name is Dan and I am raising money to help my friend Tommy and his 17 year old son Dylan.
They’re a family just like most of you reading this page.
I've known Dylan for most of his life, and have always thought of myself as a funny uncle or maybe the dork uncle to him. I truly love Dylan.
Unfortunately, Dylan is dealing with things that I have never had to, and most people shouldn’t have to, at 17 or any age. He identifies male and has started steps for that process with testosterone therapy. His identification as trans is wholly supported by family and friends, and he is embraced for being him.
Dylan also suffers from depression, anxiety and issues of self-harm, with heartbreaking scars up and down his arms.
He has turned towards eating disorders to cope with many of these challenges. He was hospitalized through ACUTE at Denver Health for medical stabilization in 2021 for Anorexia. Once stabilized, he, went to ERC (Eating Recovery Center), a step down unit for in-patient therapy meal plans, etc. There were massive bills associated with both of these places. All in all, he was hospitalized for about four and a half months.
Following his in-patient stays, he came home, but continued to struggle with the eating plan and life’s pressures. He relapsed, but with Bulimia this time. Because of the low weight and severity of illness, multiple therapists and nutritionists will not take him on as a patient. He is considered too big of a liability and needed to be in a medical stabilization unit.
Thankfully he was recently admitted to the ER at Children's Hospital and into their stabilization unit just before Christmas. He was admitted at 64 lbs. with a massively low Potassium rate, which affects heart function.
He was cleared to leave on 12/29 as medically stable, awaiting a bed at a step down facility, and is in need of extensive therapy and massive behavioral health support. He has plans to go to Veritas, a conglomerate of facilities in multiple states that work primarily with trans male patients. Essentially, the best possible place for him to go.
Right now, he is home, with his dad putting in a feeding tube regularly, so he can get any nutrition. He won't eat solid foods. The bed at Veritas (across the country) could open up tomorrow, or in a month. He requires full-time monitoring. We don't know what the total cost of this will be, we do know the upfront cost is $17,000.00.
That is why we are starting this page and reaching out to all of you. I want to find some way to fix this and help Dylan find hope but I know that I can't, we need to get him with people that can. That is why I am asking for your help.
I want to protect him and I want to make sure he can live a happy and healthy life. I want him to know that he is loved and valued. I want to do everything I possibly can to make that happen and I feel helpless. I have made calls and spoke to a lot of you reading this and I want to say thank you.
I know that may feel hollow on a gofundme page but the overwhelming support from the people I have reached out to has inspired me, half the time I am not sure if my uncontrollable tears are happy or sad.
