Yesterday morning I woke up to my best friend in a great deal of pain. I jumped out of bed to find Harvey, my BAGEL (Basset Hound/Beagle mix), curled up on the floor, yelping, shaking and drooling.
Unable to walk, I rushed him to the closest animal hospital only to be told that he needed a specialist. A catheter was placed in Harvey's arm, and pain meds were administered. That's all they could do to keep him more "comfortable," though I was told he was still in extreme pain and needed to be taken to a neurologist immediately.

I sped Harvey to the nearest qualified specialist, Southeast Veterinary Neurology in Miami.
The doctor saw us right away & Harvey was put under anesthetic to undergo an MRI. It was revealed that he had developed a severe case of Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae of the spinal column burst (herniate) into the spinal cord space. These discs then press on the nerves running through the spinal cord causing pain, nerve damage, and paralysis.
The surgeon recommended that we not wake Harvey from the anesthetic and put him directly from the MRI machine onto the operating table for surgery. There was no other option if I wanted him to live a comfotable life.

I am now faced with a $10,000 bill between the emergency vet visits, surgery, medication and the recovery process ahead, which is 4-6 weeks of strict cage rest. Please help me help my buddy, my best friend, Harvard. He just had his 9th birthday and has many good years to live. Anyone that has met harvey knows he is a gentle soul who loves everyone and everything, so help me show him love in return! Anything and everything will help. Thank you and I will post updates soon.
