On November 24th we had our level 2 anatomy scan to look for a cleft lip and palette. We received amazing news that the baby's lip and palette were perfect. But soon after, our world began to crash around us. I honestly don't remember much after the Dr coming in and saying there was something wrong with the right side of the baby's heart. My whole body just went numb, and I felt like I was in a daze. After some blood work, they referred us to the pediatric cardiologist department at Children's Medical Hospital. On December 2nd, we had a fetal echocardiogram and a consultation with a pediatric cardiologist. There are 2 major problems with the baby's heart. She has a Pulmonary Atresia and Tricuspid Stenosis. In small terms, the right side of the baby's heart isn't working properly, which is the side of the heart that supplys blood flow to the lungs. The plan as of now is that as soon as she is born they will take her in the catheter lab, and try to place a Stent in the PDA artery, which only forms during utero, and only stays open 2-3 days after birth. If the Stent cannot be placed they will take her in for open heart surgery to place a shunt. She will stay a minimum of 4 weeks in the hospital no matter what. She will be put on blood thinners, and have a feeding tube. When we get to bring her home, they will send us with special equipment to monitor her heart, oxygen, and so on. At 4-6 months they will do open heart surgery to reroute the superior vena cava directly to the pulmonary artery. This will allow oxygen poor blood from the upper body to flow directly into the lungs, without passing through the heart. Then at 3-4 years old, they will do the same, but the inferior vena cava will be connected to the pulmonary artery. In short terms, they are going to make it to where blood flow completely bypasses the right side of the heart, and goes directly into her lungs. Lawrence and I are looking at very difficult times, and are admittedly lost right now. The Dr's have told us time and time again that we didn't cause this, and it just happens. We will be starting a GoFund Me, and asking for donations. We have a long road ahead of us, and are trying to prepare as much as possible. Support, prayers, and your thoughts for our baby girl and us would be very much appreciated. We are terrified. There is still so much unknown, and we're trying to take everything one day at a time. We are needing any help we can get and appreciate everyones support.
