Dear Friends,
Lexa, my beautiful brave, 25 year old daughter is scheduled for gender affirming surgery, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on November 12. She is smart and quick witted, beautiful and tall; the first thing I said to her when she told me she was trans was "You're going to make a very tall woman!". She has aspirations to be a journalist and is equipped with a fierce sense of social justice. She may have got that from her parents; both had careers as youth workers.
When we go to Montreal, B.C. Medical Services Plan pays for Lexa’s flights, ground transportation and accommodations, but it does not pay for me to accompany her for this very important trip. This is a necessity for both of us. She also needs to purchase special medical supplies both before and after the surgery to care for herself. Lexa will need to recover for four months after surgery before she is able to return to any kind of work. I will be taking time off of work to care for her in the immediate weeks after her recovery.
As you can imagine even the basics in Vancouver are expensive for a young person, and she is going to come up short for the four months she is going to be recovering from surgery.
I am, have been and will continue to support her financially as much as possible. I will move mountains, scrape by and humble myself if that’s what’s needed to support Lexa make this incredible step towards becoming her true, strong, amazing self. I have learned so much about myself through this process and loving her as I do. I am grateful and honoured to witness her bravery and courage.
I know that this surgery is saving her life and giving her a chance to make herself truly congruent. She is talented, humble, frugal and motivated. I know she will blossom after this transformation.
If you can donate towards this life changing event please do.
In gratitude,
Merlyn Horton
