Donate to help Myla in her fight against cancer

Hi. We are the friends and family members of Myla Brina-Layosa, or Banene as she is known to her family, a 38-year-old healthcare worker (a nurse by profession) who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May 2021. Myla was rushed to the emergency room of a hospital in Manila on October 8, 2022, due to complications of her recurrent cancer with metastasis to other organs. Myla was transferred to the intensive care unit for 5 days following the infections. She is requesting your prayers and financial support as she fights for her life against cancer.

Please allow us to tell you a bit more about Myla.

Myla is a kind, gentle, reliable, helpful, and loving friend and family member. Below are photos of Myla with her husband Kim and with her niece Ashley.

She loves life, enjoys cycling, swimming, and rollerskating, appreciates nature, and bathing in sunlight. She was a dancer and gymnast in high school.

She is a passionate worker and she did not hesitate to fulfill her duties as a medical professional during the pandemic even though she herself is immunocompromised as she was born with weak lungs. Due to the shortage of healthcare workers in the Philippines during the pandemic, she immediately returned to her workplace after finishing her first course of chemotherapy last year.

Myla volunteered in the Robredo electoral campaign in May 2022, and contributed an essay titled "Cancer Warrior for VP Leni" to the free e-book Mas Radikal ang Magmahal (It's more Radical to Love). Masking up, Myla went with her friends to one of the rallies to express her support, wearing a pink shirt that says "Cancer Warrior for Leni" that she had designed herself. She wrote, "I wanted to experience what it felt to go there and support someone who was there for me/us during our darkest days." The Office of the Vice President had covered P70,000 worth of chemotherapy medicine.

Sadly, Myla's doctor informed her of her cancer recurrence in June 2022. She has undergone a total of 9 chemotherapy sessions to date. She was also infected with COVID-19 in August 2022 which delayed her therapy and aggravated her recovery.

Health insurance and government aid in the Philippines do not provide enough coverage to foot Myla's medical bills. The medical benefit from her employer for this year has also already been exhausted. Past medical expenses amounting to PhP354,000 (USD6,000) have already been paid for by family and friends.

The bill for her current hospitalization is now at over PhP200,000 (USD3,400) for medicine, ICU charges for 5 days, laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures). This amount excludes medical professional fees and the costs continues to accrue. Upon release from the hospital, Myla will also continue her search for treatment options such as immunotherapy. We now reach out to other kind souls for their assistance.

Here is Myla's latest photo taken on October 22, 2022 which we are sharing with her permission. Myla also sends her thanks to everyone for their help, prayers, and good wishes.
