Help Hang On Climbing move to another warehouse

It was December 2019 when Hang On Climbing opened its doors for the first time ever on the island of Lanzarote, Canary Islands. One of a kind, the first and only local indoor climbing gym open to the general public.

Before then, in the eyes of many, climbing was just something extravagant reserved for an exclusive few who dare to challenge themselves in a perhaps questionable way.

In these 5 years, we managed to change those people's minds and to raise awareness of such an amazing sport amongst both adults and children - the numbers speak for themselves. More than 40.000 people (residents and tourists) have climbed on our walls; some only occasionally, others have fallen in love with the sport and decided to revolve their lifestyle around it.

So many local youngsters have been able to discover a fun, healthy and alternative sport to the already known football, surf and water sports typical of the island, getting to know other peers and become friends in the process.

Not to mention the 120 children that signed up to our classes and all the school outings we organized; we feel extremely privileged to have been able to introduce such an amazing sport to the island and see how so many lives have been transformed in such a positive way.

The kids have grown, become stronger and more confident, learned how to challenge themselves and how to support and cheer others up through difficult times. All of this, to us, is priceless.

Hang On Climbing has helped a lot of people with fitness and mental health struggle since the pandemic, and today has become an essential part of the sporting world on the island and the entire archipelago.In fact, we've been hosting official Canarian Climbing Championships since 2022, a wild ride that allowed us to bring together climbers of all ages from the other islands.

Now, here comes the sad part.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances with our warehouse, we have been forced to close our doors at the beginning of March 2024. After weeks of intense struggle, desperate searching and endless bureaucracy to deal with, we finally managed to find a new location for us to keep going.

The thing is, moving is not simple, easy or cheap. We must disassemble all the walls, and relocating them into the new warehouse; then, we must pay the rent and a few months deposit in advance whilst doing this refurbishment, and we also need to submit all the correct paperwork to the town hall and pay an engineer for the plans.

At the moment, this is the only way that indoor climbing can continue to survive and thrive here in Lanzarote. But this time, we can't do this on our own. We need your help.

That's why we set up this GoFundMe page, in order to raise enough money so that we can hopefully move forward with this new exciting project of ours.

En diciembre de 2019 Hang On Climbing abrió sus puertas por primera vez en la isla de Lanzarote, en Canarias. Hablamos de un lugar único en su clase, el primer y único gimnasio de escalada indoor local abierto al público en general.

Antes de eso, a los ojos de muchos, la escalada era simplemente algo extravagante practicado por unos pocos que se atrevían a desafiarse de una manera quizás cuestionable.

En estos 5 años, logramos cambiar la opinión de esas personas y concienciar adultos y niños sobre este deporte increíble. Más de 40,000 personas (residentes y turistas) han escalado en nuestras paredes; algunos solo ocasionalmente, otros se han enamorado de la escalada y han decidido adaptar su estilo de vida a ella. Muchos jóvenes locales han podido descubrir un deporte divertido, saludable y alternativo al fútbol, surf y deportes acuáticos típicos de la isla, conociendo a otros compañeros y haciéndose amigos en el proceso.

Todo esto sin mencionar a los 120 niños que se inscribieron en nuestras clases, además de las muchísimas excursiones escolares que organizamos; nos sentimos extremadamente privilegiados de haber podido introducir un deporte tan asombroso en la isla y ver cómo tantas vidas han sido transformadas de manera tan positiva. Esos niños y niñas han crecido, se han vuelto más fuertes y seguros, han aprendido a desafiarse a sí mismos y a cómo apoyar y animar a los demás en momentos difíciles. Todo esto no tiene precio.

Además, el Club Hang On ha ayudado a mucha gente con la salud física y mental desde la pandemia hasta el día de hoy, y se ha convertido en una parte esencial del mundo deportivo en la isla y en todo el archipiélago. Llevamos organizando los Campeonatos Canarios de Escalada oficiales desde 2022, un viaje alucinante que nos ha permitido reunir a escaladores de todas las edades procedentes de las otras islas.

Ahora, aquí viene la parte triste.

Desafortunadamente, debido a circunstancias imprevistas relativas a nuestro almacén, nos hemos visto obligados a cerrar nuestras puertas a principios de marzo de 2024. Después de semanas de lucha intensa, búsqueda desesperada y burocracia interminable para lidiar con, finalmente logramos encontrar una nueva ubicación para poder seguir adelante.

El problema es que mudarse no es simple, fácil ni barato. Debemos desmontar todas las paredes y reubicarlas en la nueva nave; luego, teneos que pagar el alquiler y unos meses de depósito por adelantado mientras hacemos esta remodelación, y también necesitamos presentar toda la documentación correcta al ayuntamiento y pagar a un ingeniero por los planos.

Ahora mismo, esta es la única forma en que la escalada indoor puede seguir sobreviviendo y prosperando aquí en Lanzarote. Pero no podemos hacer esto solos, necesitamos tu ayuda.

Por eso creamos esta página de GoFundMe, con el fin de recaudar suficiente dinero para seguir adelante con este emocionante proyecto.
