December 7, 2017: FJ was admitted to the hospital after being rushed to the ER and after days of testing, he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Since that day, there have been countless appointments and tests. On Tuesday, January 23rd, FJ will begin his battle, starting with 4 months of chemotherapy. Immediately following chemotherapy, FJ will start radiation and has been asked to participate in a clinical trial for a new drug. Once the study is complete, FJ will go through removal and reconstructive surgery.
FJ, his wife, Kristie and 3 children moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in June and upon relocating, FJ had to leave his teaching job of 25 years. His current job does not have company benefits, paid sick time off, vacation or disability. If he is unable to work, he is not paid. He has continued to work since his diagnosis, but with the grueling road ahead of aggressive treatment, there will be a significant loss of income. While our concern is FJ’s health and treatment response, his greatest concern is the ability to continue to work and take care of his family. Kristie has made it her priority to be at as many appointments as possible and is going to have to adjust her work schedule to do so while also navigating the kid’s schedules. With the recent move, they do not know many people in their town/neighborhood and no longer have friends or family nearby for support and assistance.
The goal of this fund is to help reduce the burden of costs associated with their medical deductible, travel & parking for medical appointments in downtown Philadelphia (over an hour away from their home) any treatments not covered by insurance and unexpected future expenses.
We will also use this platform as a way to communicate updates on FJ’s treatment and progress.
We completely understand if you are unable to donate, but would appreciate your prayers for FJ and his family during this time. Please surround them with love and strength, so they can focus on beating this together.
We are extremely grateful to all who have offered support, prayers and donations. We cherish each and every one.
