Liam Xavier Martin 6 years old from Elyria, OH was recently playing with his two younger siblings daily and starting his new year as a first grader. Liam is an animal lover, a big brother,  a son, a comedian,  and an athlete. He is filled with love, compassion, and brings a smile to anyone he meets. The week of September 15th Liam presented with symptoms appearing to be signs of the cold or flu. Liam's symptoms persisted into the night and progressed into pain and swelling within his ankles and feet. At the end of Saturday September 15th Liam sat in the emergency room unable to bear weight on his feet in pain with his father. Blood results revealed low blood counts specifically platelets and hemoglobin exhibiting severe anemia. Liam was sent to the downtown main campus facility and admitted to the pediatric oncology and hematology unit. By the end of the weekend his family would learn of his new diagnosis of leukemia. Liam is a fighter,  more specifically a superhero. Liam has overcame chemo treatments with a mediport insertion, bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, weakness, blood transfusions, and pain. Despite all of these obstacles Liam starts every day with a smile on his face and a drive to surpass the diagnosis. Liam was discharged from the hospital on September 25th and is home now. His blood counts remain low suppressing his immunity resulting in neutropenia,  a term used to describe severely low white blood cells and neutraphils. Liam's low immunity and neutropenia requires neutropenic precautions to be in place, involving a mask to be be worn when exposed to crowds or areas placing him at risk for infection. Liam will attend school at home in the months to follow, he will continue treatment for approximately 3.5 years and will be in the 95% remission rates with leukemia.  At day 29 he will be assessed, a bone marrow aspiration performed and will be considered to be in remission if no immature white blood cells are found within his bone marrow.Liam's father has tirelessly, without fail remained by his side throughout his treatments and hospital stays. Liam's journey and plan of care will require funding for medical expenses, travel, hospitalizations, medications, and nursing care for the course of his treatment. Join Liam in his fight to conquer his diagnosis and get him back to being the fun loving boy he is with his siblings and classmates today!
