On Sunday, November 17, Dave went to the emergency room feeling unwell. He had been dealing with a chronic cough and pain in his chest and ribs for quite some time. He was sent home with antibiotics and Tylenol 3, hoping to recover and get back to his normal life. He went to work on Monday as normal, trying to push through— Dave is a very strong and stubborn man and will try and push through anything that comes his way.

In the early hours of Tuesday, November 18, his partner Janet watched in alarm as Dave struggled with severe chest pain and trouble breathing. She called 911, and he was rushed to Langley Memorial Hospital. Later that afternoon, our family received an urgent call: we needed to get to the hospital immediately.

When we arrived, we learned the devastating news— Dave had severely broken ribs and was fighting pneumonia. The situation was serious enough that he was rushed to Surrey Memorial Hospital around 4:00 p.m. for advanced care. Since then, he was been in the ICU fighting for his life and fighting these diagnoses— respiratory failure, pneumonia, broken ribs, and renal failure.

Dave is the sole provider for his household, and this sudden medical emergency has turned our lives upside down. His partner Janet has her own complex health issues and Dave took care of her. While he focuses on healing, the financial strain of lost income, and daily expenses has become overwhelming. Janet is now on her own trying to manage rent, bills, and other expenses on her pension which is very difficult.
