Hello,
My name is Daniel and 6 years ago, on my way to work one morning, I was in a train accident that changed my life forever. After I got hit by the train, I knew right away that tough times were coming but I also made an instant decision of being strong, fight for my life and face this new challenge with positivity and courage. After the accident, I had bilateral amputation of my legs: right leg above the knee and left leg below the knee, however due to hospital complications my right leg had to be re-amputated above the knee. I also broke my hip and required reconstructive surgery of the hip, pelvis and left shoulder. I was hospitalized for 4 months and then in home bed rest for another 6 months. The first year was the most difficult one as I cannot begin to explain how much I've had to adapt and learn in order to survive and to continue with my life. But my life changed not only in a physical way, I also had to interrupt my studies in Digital Animation and Design as I had to take a full time job to be able to cover the medical expenses, house modifications, and medical equipment. Even after all these situations, I can say that I’ve always been a very positive and joyful person so having the accident was never something that stopped me from enjoying life.
For 5 years I’ve been trying to get back on my feet and put my life back on track. Even though I feel very proud of the work I’ve done so far, I haven’t been able to accomplish all my goals, and a big reason why is due to economic limitations. That brings me to this point, where I am -with all the humility in my heart- asking the world to help me accomplish them. I want to walk again and finish my studies. I will never give up on those dreams and I work hard every day to make them real. I’ve recently started playing wheelchair rugby and basketball, looking forward to have a healthier lifestyle, exercise on a regular basis and lose the weight I’ve put on since the accident. Being in these teams have had a great impact in my life as it has become something that I enjoy greatly, it makes me happy, and it has been a huge motivation to find more ways to play more sports.
In order for me to accomplish all my goals, I will require extensive physical and prosthetic therapy. I also have pressing needs for a surgery left pending for my shoulder, and I need to invest in better medical equipment that will help me with transportation and rehabilitation. By that I mean, maintenance to my current wheelchair, car modifications for adaptive driving and purchase of a sports wheelchair.
It is very important to have adequate prosthetic treatment and to start physical therapy as soon as possible if I want to have a chance at walking again. The funds I am asking for will be used for my rehabilitation of which some expenses include: medical bills, supplies, physical therapy, wheelchair and prosthesis.
I know I have a hard and long road ahead of me, but I am also ready for it! I would greatly appreciate any support that you can give me. I will make sure to update this page as we progress so you can follow the journey with me.
Thank you so much!
Danny
