We all know 2020 has been a tough year!  For our beloved son Daniel it has been especially tough.  Daniel was recently diagnosed with a genetic condition called Pectus Excavatum (“sunken chest”) that requires a major surgery to repair and has been declined by our medical bill-sharing program we are apart.
 
Daniel began the year as a 15-year-old fast growing young man, playing sax in his school band, riding his bike and playing with his dog Cooper.  It was during his growth spurt last year that his breastbone began collapsing inward.  Imagine being a teenage boy watching your body begin to form, only to have your chest begin to collapse inward.
 
To repair this collapse, which is now pressing on his heart and lungs, Daniel is scheduled to have surgery on March 29, 2021 at WakeMed in Raleigh, NC.   It’s a major surgery that requires the insertion of 2 titanium bars into the chest, which are forced outward.  Daniel will be in the hospital a few days and the bars will remain in his chest for up to 3 years.  His care will require long term physical therapy as well. 
 
Recently, we received the devastating news that our Christian medical bill-sharing program we are apart WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF SURGERY.  They consider pectus excavatum a congenital issue and therefore not covered.  Even though there was no sign of Daniel’s pectus excavatum until 2020.
 
The estimated cost of the surgery and hospital stay with negotiated discounts, medicine and future treatment are approximately $40,000.  

We are still leaving no stone unturned searching for coverage and surgery approval, but at present we need to prepare to pay out of pocket.
 
This is an overwhelming expense for our family, but having served in ministry and missions for 20 plus years, we know that God is faithful, people are kind and generous and all of our needs will be met!
