Charms Race To Recovery Fund

Donation protected
First we want to thank everyone so very much for your prayers and thoughts. So far, they are helping! Charm is still up at San Luis Rey Equine Hospital and will likely be the
re until at least early next week. (Needless to say, we have set up this gofundme campaign to help with the enormous bills heading our way and adding up each day.) God willing, she will be able to leave next week and will go to one of our dearest of friends in Ramona where she can be in a hospital stall to help reduce chances of infection, which is our biggest concern and also so she can assist in her recovery. If she pulls through this without any major setbacks, she has a very long road ahead of her but with much light at the end of the tunnel. Charms injuries were incredibly severe and equally complex due to the extent of them and also the location and difficulty to heal. They are at her fetlocks, which is an area of constant movement, making it difficult for sutures to stay put and tissue to stay closed. (WARNING-GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF INJURIES for those asking details; all of the skin, tissue on both of her front legs was completely removed at the fetlocks, tendons and ligaments torn and ripped and she had a sesamoid bone fracture. It was by far the most horrific and traumatic thing I have ever seen and two of her Dr's had never seen anything like them on a living animal in their entire career.) Both of her tendon sheaths are open, which is not optimal however it is looking like her right front may hopefully stop draining which will help greatly, leaving us with one uphill battle instead of two.
It is important for us to let everyone know that every decision we have made has been in the very best interest of our baby girl. She wants to get through this without any doubt in my mind and that was made clear to me by her on Wednesday night.. We also were very clear to our vet and the vets/surgeon at SLREH that we did not want to put her through this ordeal if her chances for coming through were slim or if she would endure excessive pain and also, if these injuries would cause her to have chronic pain or issues later in life as a result. We would have both endured the unimaginable heartache of putting her down if that would have been in her best interest. At this point, and very thankfully, it is not. If we are blessed enough to get through without infection or major setback, she has an 80-90% chance at even being back on trail. Which is secondary to us. If we can keep our baby girl with us and out of pain, that is fine with us. We just don't want to lose her.
As of right now, her Dr at SLR is encouraged, which is a change from the previous "cautiously optimistic". We are evaluating on a day by day basis with our vet of 20 years and the Dr's at SLR as that is all we can do and ask that you all continue to say prayers. I simply cannot tell you how much we appreciate it and need them all. Charm is a very special girl with an incredible soul and spirit. She is a great granddaughter of Seattle Slew and we are told that is one of the toughest bloodlines there is. If there is a horse that can get through this, it is Charm. We appreciate any help we can get, whether donation, a prayer or a share.
With love and gratitude, Kim and Jay
