Brenda Sparling Eccles was raised in Chautauqua Counties small village of Bemus Point, New York and now resides in Jamestown, New York. She has gone through a lifetime of hardship and challenges right from birth but she has never lost her smile or happiness.
Brenda was diagnosed at birth with Hip Dysplasia, Disintegrating hip bone, Club foot and Elbow issues. She had many surgeries and braces to try to help her birth defects. She was treated at the Shriners Hospital in Erie, Pa. Brenda was not diagnosed until about the age of 4 with nerve damage in both ears causing hearing loss that affected speak, learning and comprehension. She was fitted with two hearing aids. Today she has a hearing loss of about 70%. We just learned that with her hearing loss that the damage in her ears causes her comprehension issues because the damage in her ears does not transmit the information to her brain all the time. This has gotten significantly worse. Her right ear only has a 36% rate and her left ear is 68% rate of sending the correct information to her brain so sometimes you have to repeat things several times for her to understand which can be very frustrating for her. We are trying to obtain her new hearing aids with better technology that we hope will help her more.
At the age of 16 she almost succumbed to Lymphatic Leukemia. After intensive radiation to her head and neck, along with chemotherapy treatments she finally overcame it after many, many months in Roswell Hospital in Buffalo, NY. The intensive treatments did cause development issues but she remained a happy bubbly person.
Later in life, Brenda, was met with another challenge, Endometrial Cancer. She met this head on with treatment and surgery. She overcame once again!
In the last couple of years she has had several spots of Melanoma removed and is closely monitored.
Her current challenge is overcoming Total Hip Replacement which has made her very unsteady on her feet but allowed her to walk so much better and she is doing very well. We are all proud of her!!
In May 2019 she had a breast cancer scare but it was caught early and the small area of precancer was removed.
Our family looked into the possibility of an Assistance Dog through New Hope Assistance Dogs in Warren, PA. When we mentioned the possibility to Brenda she lit right up! Her answer was a resounding YES!!
We have counseled with this Assistance group and a decision was made that she could benefit from a dog that would help her with her issues due to her last hip surgery and her lifetime hearing disabilities. Her husband of 17 years works long hours to provide for them and does not like to leave her all alone. His fear is that she might fall with no one there. They are also afraid if she does not have her hearing aids in while sleeping or showering that she can not hear smoke detectors, doorbells or telephones.
Brenda needs to feel safe and finally be more independent. She wants to get out of her house on her own with this treasured friend to assist her... We are so grateful for any help!!
Please Help with the costs of her new companion named .....Victory!!
We are being allowed to make payments for him while Brenda is doing one on one training on a weekly basis.
Her dream is coming true!!
