Dear Family and Friends,

Many of you know Bart Zavaletta as a Father, a Husband, a Brother, a Cousin, a Friend, a Coach, a Teacher, a Hard Worker, and so much more… Many of you all know that he’s a devoted Catholic. But if you’re reading this, then you likely now know that he’s also going to be a Fighter.

Bart has been diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer that attacks the immune system that limits the body’s ability to fight off infections. If you know Bart, and again if you’re reading this then you probably do, you know he’s NOT short on the prayers and he’s most certainly not short in his fighting spirit. He is however, in need of funds. Though he participates in a National health sharing ministry made up of a substantial  network of faith-filled people who share each other’s medical bills the fact of the matter is he is considered “self-pay.” Being the man of faith he’s always been, if there’s one thing that Bart would not hesitate to tell you that he needs is “Prayer” – and justifiably so. We’re starting this fund because of what he won’t ever ask for, money. The reality of our society is that we also need funds to provide the utmost medical treatments for our loved ones. The proceeds that each of you donate will go towards opening up treatment options for Bart.

Now, for those that don’t know Bart’s full story, here’s a snippet:

He was born and raised in traditionally Hispanic family in Brownsville, TX. He was always an active child (Soccer, baseball, football, basketball, etc…), he attended Russell Elementary early on, then St. Mary’s Catholic School for Elementary. He then went to St. Joseph’s Academy for Junior High and High School. He was active in sports, outdoors activities and campus ministry to name a few. While at “St. Joe’s”, he began to feel a calling of servitude to Christ. As the Quarterback of the football team, you may like to know that Bart, knelt in a quick prayer before EVERY, SINGLE, PLAY (that is not an exaggeration) – as you may imagine this did not play out very well with the coaching staff in a sport that literally has a count down on every single play. However, you must also know that Bart was blessed with a rocket of an arm, so there was not really much the coaching staff would do. This athleticism took him to the University of Houston, where he was a multi-year letterman on the Cougars’ Football Team. He’s also a Cougar Athletic Legacy (his Dad, Brother and Sister were all athletes at U of H). During this time, he began dedicating more of his time to serving Christ. After graduating he decided to join the Oblate Seminary - this did not exactly come as a huge surprise to a lot of the people that he had touched over the years. After his Novitiate he decided to take a sabbatical from the seminarian life and began working at St. Anthony’s High School in San Antonio, TX, while attending the neighboring church, Our Lady of Grace, he befriended the Bastien Family, and specifically, Erin Bastien. Erin would eventually steal his heart away from the Oblates, but certainly not from his spiritual calling to serve Christ. Since they married in 2010 Bart and Erin have lived in Omaha, NE. Bart has continued his passion of servitude as a Theology teacher at Skutt Catholic High School teaching the next generation of students. He is a soon to be ordained Deacon in the Omaha Catholic community. When Bart is not in class teaching, and much like his father “Coach Gus”, Bart pulls double duties and focuses his efforts into his construction company, Diakoni Home Improvements. Bart and Erin are proud parents to a beautiful daughter, Beya, and sons, Bartolo, Bruno and Bailon. Bart is above all else a true family man. A gift of a donation would truly be a blessing to this beautiful family.

A lot of the time, the most essential people in our societies lack the necessary benefits and as such are the most vulnerable when the unexpected health crisis arises. Fortunately for Bart, he’s got a LOT of teammates against this opponent, and that’s why we’re asking you to pitch in whatever you can. We fully expect Bart to be wearing his “Cancer Survivor” gear very shortly, but we need your help to get there.

God Bless -
