My wife is 37 weeks pregnant with our first boy, Yusuf. Delivery is scheduled for October 12th, 2017. However, at 26 weeks of pregnancy an anomaly ultrasound scan detected a very serious and unexpected problem with Yusuf's heart. His heart condition was discovered to be Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) at the Cardiac Center, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Hollywood, Florida, USA on August 28th, 2017.
In babies with HLHS, the left side of the heart cannot pump oxygen-rich blood to the body properly. During the first few days of life for a baby with HLHS, the oxygen-rich blood bypasses the poorly functioning left side of the heart through the patent ductus arteriosus and the patent foramen ovale. The right side of the heart then pumps blood to both the lungs and the rest of the body. However, when these openings close, it becomes difficult for oxygen-rich blood to get to the rest of the body and the baby dies.
The life-saving procedure is a 3-stage surgery that is not done in Trinidad and Tobago due to its complex nature and the unavailability of extended neonatal intensive care. The first surgery is ideally done within the first 2 weeks of life, the second at 3/4 months old, and the third at 3/4 years old. At Boston's Children's Hospital, the #1 Ranked Children's Hospital by U.S. News and World report, the cost of the first surgery is $USD 350,000; the second is $USD 130,000 and the third is $USD 120,000.
My wife and are desperate to raise sufficient funds for the life saving surgeries for our precious baby so he can have a beautiful life.
We will be forever grateful to you for sincere contributions towards the best Birthday Gift ever, a gift of life.
