I am Armenak Khachatryan, writing about my son's life story.
Areg, whose name means “sun” in Armenian, is battling neuroblastoma – (a rare type of cancer affecting children under the age of 5) most often in infants and young children.
In the summer of 2017 Areg who outwardly appeared healthy, collapsed during a vacation trip with his family. He got fever, sweated extraordinarily and lost the ability to walk and was hospitalized.
Areg spent a week at Children’s Medical Center before doctors were able to diagnose the disease - stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma.
Anna and me did a research and decided to take him to Germany and the he was admitted to Cologne Uniklinik on September 18, 2017.
All started with scans, different tests and a treatment plan was made, which included 6 cycles of chemotherapies, resection of the main tumor, high dose chemotherapy combined with an autologous stem cell transplant. After all these tough road, he also had 5 cycles of immunotherapy, a more novel therapy which is meant to prevent relapse.
December 2018, Areg was NED, we could leave back to our home country, Armenia. But with a cancer like neuroblastoma life is not easy, it required medical check ups every two months.
This year due to the pandemic, Areg was unable to undergo his regular scans in April, while the ones in July already registered a bone marrow relapse.
We as parents, literally said were lost, devastated and shocked, not knowing what to do.
In our hearts we believed we we were going to find a cure for him and were lucky to contact Dr Giselle Sholler, at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte , North Carolina and hear back from her.
Areg is under treatment at the moment, in the hands of a wonderful team and we truly believe we are where we should be and here is where we are going to find the cure for our brave and smart boy.
Areg is now 6,5 years old, a boy mature beyond his age, who plays chess and loves life, yoga , is a big big lego fun and loves his friends. He is full of positive energy despite of what he has been going through the last years.
What he wants most of all is to return to his home country, where his family & friends are and go to school, as other kids do, learn to read and write .
To make it all come true we need Your support. We are facing hardship times with his current treatment costs, but believe that with Your help we will move forward and get the cure, the health we have been looking for the last 3 years and till now.
