Adrian has Cancer. This tiny little 7 year old boy who has been fighting for his life since he entered the world such a short time ago is now battling again to stay alive. Read below to hear his story of how he is fighting to survive.
The first time Adrian came through our school doors he was just 3 years old. He was always smiling as his mom wheeled him into the building in his stroller. His big sister was in Kindergarten. Unlike the cheerful Adrian, Cynthia spent the first few months of Kindergarten crying hysterically and asking to go home. A crying 5 year old in Kindergarten is not unusual. One that cries for months definitely could be alarming. After a few weeks of Cynthia's crying in school, mom revealed that Cynthia's younger brother was very sick. Adrian was born with a heart defect and at 6 months of life he had a heart transplant. This little 3 year old boy had been in and out of the hospital for his entire life. Now at 3 years old his hospital stays were longer and more frequent, his doctors fearing that his body was rejecting the donor heart so close to the 3 year mark. Why would the 3 year mark matter? That’s when the chance of rejection is greatly reduced, when you pass that 3 year mark. Now we understood completely why Cynthia spent her days crying at school. We wanted to cry right along with her!
Fast forward 2 years and now its Adrian’s turn to start Kindergarten. This smiley boy fought the fight and his body did not reject the donor heart. He was ready to start school! Adrian was consistently missing school. He had bouts of pneumonia, reoccurring ear infections, kidney infections, numerous hospital stays. When he was in school he was very lethargic and clearly falling far behind his peers academically.
Adrian's health is of constant concern to his family. All of it weighing so heavily on his parents and siblings. Recently Adrian began wearing hearing aids because of the permanent damage the reoccurring ear infections have caused. He also started looking very swollen in his face, specifically on one side of his cheek. He complained of pain from the hearing aids and, being as vigilant as his mother is, she took him straight to the hospital, an all too familiar place for Adrian. After a battery of invasive tests his family was given the news that no parent ever expects or wants to hear: Adrian has Cancer.
This tiny little 7 year old boy who has been fighting for his life since he entered the world such a short time ago is now battling again to stay alive. We spoke to mom today and they have begun an aggressive round of chemotherapy. We asked how we could help and all she said was pray for my baby.
We told her we've been praying for Adrian since the day he walked through our school doors some 5 years ago. She asked how she is supposed to tell him - that this was a curve ball she never imagined. He wants to know why his hair is falling out, but she does not know how to utter the words that he is much too young to understand. No amount of prayer is ever enough.
But there is more we can do. We can ease the burden this family feels. We can help alleviate the worry of "Where will our next meal come from? " "How will we pay for his medical expenses?" and "What will I do now that I can’t go back to work?" This family and this little boy have been fighting this battle for far too long and need any help that they can get. Please help in any way that you can. If you cannot donate, please share this page. Most of all keep Adrian and his family in your prayers.
