Hello to all of my family and friends and people we havent met! My name is Chelsie and I would like to share something special with all of you.
I am starting this fundraising campaign in honor of my cousin Jessica and her young family. Jessica is a single mother of two beautiful children, Abigail and Adam. She has endured many things in the recent years, the untimely passing of several family members in a short period of time such as her father Edwin, our grandfather, and ALMOST lost her mother Linda shortly after our grandfathers passing. She has delt with heartbreak, family drama, and has still held it together for her kids. She is someone that I aspire to be, a true role model and deep believer in her faith.
Her daughter Abigail has been her rock, and is sweet as sugar, and the best big sister to Adam. She told her mother that some day she wants to become a doctor so that she can help her brother. Adam is one of the most sweetest little boys I know and anyone else who has met him would say the same. He suffers from Spastic Cerebral Palsy and he has endured many doctor visits in his young age. Before his birth, the doctors thought Adam might have Hydrocephalis, which is a buildup of spinal fluid in the brain and that after his birth he may have needed a shunt to help drain the fluids. But he beat that odd! Not too long after is when Adam was diagnosed with his current condition.
Cerebral palsy causes problems with muscle tone, movement, balance and/or coordination. Symptoms and effects range from mild to severe. In some infants, problems are evident soon after birth. In others, diagnosis comes in later infancy or toddlerhood. The things that you and I take for granted like using the restroom, walking up and down stairs, talking, are the things that are a dream to Adam and others like him.
Currently in the state of Iowa, Govenor Brandstand is taking efforts to cut state spending costs. Where might some of these be coming from? Privatizing Title 19 (Known as Child Medicaid) for the state of Iowa. The Des Moines Register has reported that the four companies selected to operate the Iowa program have had more than 1,500 regulatory sanctions combined and have paid $10.2 million in fines over the past five years.
How does this affect Adam and his family? Adam was scheduled to have Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) Surgery. Selective dorsal rhizotomy has been shown to:
Reduce spasticity
Improve gait (walking) patterns
Help people use energy and oxygen more efficiently
Improve range of motion and functional mobility
Make it easier to perform self-care activities, such as getting dressed and grooming.
With the current state of things, a surgery that would improve not only Adams quality of life, but his mother and sisters as well is at the mercy of one persons agenda. Now trying to cut state spending is all well and dandy, but to force 560,000 of the poorest residents without healthcare, or horrible care is heartless. What many people do not know is that many other states will not accept the insurance companies that the state has picked. Many of the disabled residents do not just see one doctor, but several and its terrible that we have let insurance companies tell us where we can and cannot recieve healthcare. People who truly need help.
Adams care is time sensitive. He is about to turn seven and they reccomend that the surgery shows best results when done between the ages of four and seven. He suffers daily from pain due to the tightening in his muscles, and constant frustration that he does not know how to manage other than lashing out. Caring for Adam has a physical tole as well. Personal strain for taking care of Adams needs wear down the body. And becomes even more as he becomes older. I fear that the state may be too late when a decision is made about the privitization and if it will go thru.
After Adams surgery he will require a years worth of doctors visits and physical therapy and the hospital will not even set a date without coverage of costs. I want to make this happen for Adam! I want his family to have a happily ever after!
If funds were raised the money will go twards helping cover his costs for surgery and out patient care, and covering traveling expenses to and from the hospital as Jessica will be making numerous trips from Iowa to Minnesota.
While Adam is in recovery, Jessica will be unable to work. I want her family to be able to heal with out the strain of medical costs. Adam was scheduled to have surgery this summer but has now been put on hold. It would be a miracle to see Adam out of pain. A dream to see him walk.To chase his sister around like little brothers do. This is important to me because I know that if I was in Jessicas shoes, she would do the same for me. She has been there for me my whole life, and many other people thru the community and church.I have two small children myself and I could not imagine them not being able to have a childhood. Someone once told me a long time ago, why make life harder than it already is? This has changed my perspective on life over the years and it makes me think of my cousin and her sons situation. Why should it have to be harder for him when there is an option of hope of not being consistantly in pain?
To everyone that makes a donation to help this sweet boy, you will hold a speical place in not only my heart, but Jessicas and her families as well. We all know that that things in life are never 100% or easy but we work hard and push forward. We will be eternally greatful. If you are unable to donate, we just ask that you pass this along to your family and friends. Thoughts and Prayers for a postive outcome are always in need.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Have a wonderful evening!
Sincerely,
Chelsie
