We will never forget June 22, 2018, because that is the day Abel, Julie, and their three children's lives were irrevocably changed.
Julie had been feeling ear ache symptoms for a couple of weeks prior and was under the impression that she had a virus and just needed to rest and take fever reducers. On the morning of the 22nd, Julie chose to stay home to rest as she was feeling worse, and when Abel returned home from work, he found Julie incoherent and confused. A trip to the ER and his worst fears were realized. Julie was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis with infection in her spinal cord and surrounding her brain. After several days in a forced coma and on IV antibiotics, Julie was woken up and all seemed suddenly better. She was able to talk and answer questions and things were looking up. That elation was short lived as the early morning hours saw Julie back in an unconscious state, suffering multiple strokes and being life flighted into the Medical Center. Hours later she was taken in for brain surgery in an effort to alleviate pressure and clear the infection surrounding her brain. That is where we find ourselves today. There has been little to no change in Julie's condition, but there has also not been a worsening. Julie's doctors and care staff are working round the clock to ensure she has the best chance at recovery as possible.
In the meantime, life continues. While the once vivacious and beloved teacher remains in a coma, she is being missed not only by Abel and their children, but her presence is sorely being missed by her students, coworkers, friends, and family. The once two income household will inevitably see more than its fair share of emotional and financial struggle while Julie continues to fight and recover. This GoFundMe has been established to help the Salas family pay the quickly mounting hospital bills and living costs. No family expects to or prepares to ever experience this type of tragedy, and this is the exact reason why this fund is needed. This GoFundMe is started in the hope of alleviating some of the financial stress the family will inevitably experience. All contributions will aid in relieving this stress and will allow the family to concentrate on the more important task of healing and starting the long road to recovery.
