Help Maribel Defeat Breast Cancer!

Hello Everybody!

My name is Annie, my family and I are trying to raise money to help my mom pay for her cancer treatments. So, I’m here to share a little bit of our story with you and tell you about the most beautiful woman in OUR lives.

My mom is the nucleus in our family. She is the glue that keeps everyone together and the one that has selflessly given everything for us and others. She has touched many lives along the way and continues to do so. My mom has always been energetic, the most positive person I know and full of life!

She is a woman full of faith and serves our God with all her heart -sowing everywhere she can without expecting anything in return. She has always been a loving mother, an amazing wife and now a devoted grandmother to her two grandsons that love her dearly. However...

On March 20, 2018, our worlds were shook! My mother found a lump on her right breast. We immediately made an appointment to get her screened for a mammogram and an ultrasound. The results came back saying she needed to get a biopsy to determine if the lump was benign or malignant. On April 10, we received the news that my mom's lump was in fact malignant and positive for breast cancer. We were then faced with the situation that she had breast cancer and no insurance to fall back on.

When you hear cancer many things come to mind and your whole world comes tumbling down in a matter of seconds. If you’ve been through this you know what I’m talking about. You think death sentence, outrageous bills, endless trips to the hospital etc. But we took a deep breath and decided to go step by step being held by God's hand along the way. With the help of the doctor's staff, friends of friends, and Broward Health's hospital staff, she was able to get an appointment with an oncologist right away. A few foundations were able to cover the expenses of some of the diagnostic tests.

Since the lump was found early and it was not very big, the oncologist recommended  a lumpectomy,  possible chemotherapy, and radiation depending on some other results of the surgery. After getting the lumpectomy and getting the additional testing, the oncologist informed us that she had Her2 positive breast cancer.

Although it was a small lump, Her2 positive breast cancer is a very aggressive type of breast cancer. If it goes untreated it has a high chance to metastasize to other parts of the body very quickly.

We had the hope that after the surgery results, since the cancer had not spread yet, that she would not need chemotherapy. Unfortunately, on our last appointment with the oncologist on June 11, he confirmed that she would need 12 rounds of Chemotherapy along with a full year of a drug called Herceptin because of her Her2 status.

Now it brings me to the fundraising part of my story. Like I mentioned before, my mom has no insurance. She had insurance through my dad but the company he worked for over a decade declared bankruptcy and everyone was laid off last year. As of right now my mom is the main source of income. It has been a year of hardship for my parents in many areas but this being the hardest.

She has not qualified for any type of emergency insurance or any other type of aid. Unfortunately for my mom, all the aid that is out there is income based and geared towards very low income families. As a “self-pay patient” she is responsible to pay for the full amount of her treatment, which she needs to start as soon as possible. The hospital will not provide any service until the amount is payed in full.

We need to raise $20,000 to cover the costs of the chemotherapy treatment and various other test that need to be done along the way.

If you could support our GoFundMe by making a donation and then sharing it with your network, we would greatly appreciate it. I know that money can be tight, so please know that even $5 helps us get closer to our goal to help Maribel defeat breast cancer!

Be blessed,

Annie
