Help Nestor & Santa Venetia Market

The Santa Venetia Neighborhood Association, or "the SVNA", has served our community for many decades***. Santa Venetia Market has also served our community for many decades. When we found out that a long time market employee Nestor had been wounded by a group of young men, the SVNA and many folks in the neighborhood wanted to do something to help...
Nestor is an important part of the fabric of the community here in Santa Venetia. He is friendly, professional, helpful, fair, tolerant, dedicated, hard working – a great guy overall. He is married with a 3 ½ year old child and has worked at Santa Venetia Market for 21 years!
On July 1st the unthinkable happened…while at work Nestor noticed a man acting suspiciously in one of the aisles. When he approached and began talking to him, he was suddenly and brutally attacked by the suspicious man and 3 others who knocked him out and viciously beat him, leaving him badly wounded. Fellow employee Jose ran into harms way to help him and was also assaulted. A good Samaritan and his son saw the commotion and came to his aid as well. These 2 people have yet to be identified – if you or someone you know are these awesome individuals, please contact Nestor or the Santa Venetia Market (they'd love to say thank you) or the Marin County Sherriff's Department (they might want to hear from you about what you saw). Thankfully none of the people who came to help were badly injured. They, and others who were in the store, deserve a big thank you from all of us for their bravery – Thank You!
Nestor’s injuries were so severe that he needed to be taken by ambulance to the hospital – he needed 24 stitches in his face and was unable to work for 2 weeks. Fortunately he has healed enough to go back to work. Even after going through such a painful and deeply disturbing event, he is happy to be back and warmly greets customers.
So, what do we know? We know his injuries were severe, there were some complications, he couldn’t work for 2 weeks and although he’s back, he’s still recovering. We know this has been a trying time for the owner and staff of the market, the customers who know him and most of all for Nestor and his family. At this point there are also many unknowns – if he will have lasting ailments resulting from the attack, what bills will be covered or not and even if the 4 men responsible for this senseless attack will be brought to justice (although they were apprehended and arrested, surveillance cameras recorded images of the suspects but they may not be clear enough).
Nestor has been there for us for 21 years – it’s time for us to be there for him.
How can you help?
You can make a donation so that Nestor does not have to come out of his pocket for anything – lost wages and medical bills are the biggest concern. He has already had to endure the physical and emotional pain of going through this ordeal. With your donation, we can help him rest a little easier and not have to worry so much about having been put in a very unexpected and difficult place financially. Any medical costs not covered by insurance will be covered by Scott Day, the owner of the market (confirmed). Since this is an independently owned and operated market that has served our community and those bills may be significant, that we can pitch in to help with those costs too. Additionally, we would like to put something toward getting an improved surveillance system for the market.
All of the money we raise (less the processing fees from PayPal and GoFundMe ) will go to:
1. Nestor
2. Santa Venetia Market
The SVNA is organizing this fundraiser so we can help Nestor and Santa Venetia Market in a time of need. For those of us who care and want to know what can be done to help - friends, concerned neighbors and/ or customers – we can show our support for Nestor and our beloved Santa Venetia Market in a time of need by taking action and donating now. Thank you!
***The SVNA strives to preserve and promote the quality of life for the Santa Venetia community. This is achieved through encouraging healthy social interaction; facilitating the flow of information; and protecting the natural beauty and economic well-being of the community.
