Help Zyi Beat Cancer!

On January 13, 2021, Zyiera Leary, a seventh grader at Caddo Middle Magnet, was diagnosed with Sarcoma Colorectal Cancer. Diagnostic tests have shown that she has tumors in her lungs as well. This extremely rare cancer has afflicted an innocent twelve-year old girl and put her life at risk.
Zyiera, or “Zyi'' to her family and friends, recently underwent surgery at the Oschner Pediatric Hospital, one of the best children’s hospitals in the nation, in New Orleans and is now at home recovering. Unfortunately, Zyi will have to return to New Orleans in the very near future to have additional surgery and begin chemotherapy. This travel from Shreveport to New Orleans for Zyi’s treatment will put a large burden on her family. It is worth it, though, because Zyi is an intelligent, charming young girl who deserves a bright future.
To aid in her treatment, Zyi’s mother, Felisa, has taken a leave of absence from her position as a paraprofessional working with students who have significant needs at Shreve Island Elementary. Felisa, a beloved member of the Shreve Island community, must turn her generous, caregiving spirit to focus on her daughter’s health and well-being. Unfortunately, this means that her salary will be greatly reduced at a time when Felisa’s family needs financial assistance the most.
Though Zyi’s dad, Artis Leary, will continue to work, the mounting healthcare bills and loss of Felisa’s income will place a large burden on the Leary family’s wellbeing.
