Having our dog attacked by an alligator was not on my 2026 bingo card, but here we are. We’ve spent the last 20 hours anxiously waiting for updates from the doctors, hoping for good news. Zoey, our 9lbs Yorkie, suffered four broken ribs, both lungs collapsed, flail chest, and some pretty gnarly wounds. Despite everything, her vitals are strong and she’s fighting through the pain. The staff at Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch have been incredible, and they’re confident in her rehabilitation. It’s been a long, emotional journey, but we’re holding onto hope.

Zoey made it through surgery, but the next few hours are critical. Her body temperature is low, she’s still a little blue, and intubated. The doctors removed a third of one lobe of her lungs, and half of the remaining lobe is still compromised due to contusions. They repaired her broken ribs and explored the wounds on her back, which were worse than expected. She has three main incisions, and while we’re not out of the woods yet, this is good news. We’re expecting another update soon, and we’re so grateful for all the love and support we’ve received. Zoey is truly one of a kind, our best girl.

We just spoke to the doctor—Zoey is now breathing on her own and resting comfortably. Her body temperature is still a little low, but she’s making progress. No visitors tonight, but after tomorrow morning’s rounds, we’ll be able to see her and bring some things from home. Zoey could possibly come home tomorrow night or sometime Friday, but we still have at least 6-8 weeks of tough recovery ahead. The Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Port Charlotte was absolutely critical in saving Zoey’s life, preparing her and us for the almost hour-long drive to Lakewood Ranch.
