Writing this is incredibly hard for me. I am a single mother currently going through a painful and high-conflict divorce and custody battle. My ego tells me I should handle everything on my own and never ask for help. But right now, I have no other choice. I’m putting my pride aside and asking for support from anyone who is willing to listen, share, or help.
My former partner has access to significant financial resources through her family and has hired a top legal team in Connecticut. I have tried to keep up as best as I can, and have already spent so much on legal fees, but I’ve now reached the point where I simply cannot afford to continue. At the same time, I am working part-time and going to school while trying to stay strong for my children. Our family of four originally lived together in Connecticut. When my partner left, she took one of our children with her. Now the court is saying the children will not be separated, which means they will either both live with her in California or both live with me in Connecticut. I am already living with the heartbreak of being separated from one of my children. The possibility that I could lose both simply because I cannot afford the same level of legal representation is devastating.
I have always been the primary caregiver. My children are my entire world. All I want is a fair chance in court so that decisions about their lives are based on what is truly best for them—not on who has more money for lawyers. I am also part of the LGBTQ+ community, and our family is a same-sex family. I share this openly because community support matters, and I know how powerful it can be when people come together to help one another.
