Hello,
My name is Emily. My husband Ben and I had talked and dreamed about getting a dog for years and years as we both had dogs growing up and are passionate about rescue dogs getting the chance they all deserve. We moved to Brooklyn 3 years ago and this past summer we came across a NYC based rescue who introduced us to Zelda in October. She is the sweetest little 2-year-old "land seal" and it was love at first sight (first sniff and kiss for Zelda). We were told she loves to watch TV, ride in the car and play with other dogs. We can certainly say she enjoys all of these things and so much more now that she has started to settle into her new home with us.
Unfortunately, the medical records provided to us from the NYC shelter where she was initially surrendered were inaccurate. As soon as we brought her home, we noticed her walking abnormally and it was confirmed by two specialists that she has a left CCL tear and would need it repaired as soon as possible to prevent a likely early tear to her right CCL from worsening. We were devastated to learn that this issue was not properly identified prior to her adoption. Of course, pet ownership will always have its ups and downs but to receive this diagnosis within days of her homecoming, it was a huge blow. As many know, CCL repair (TPLO) is a very expensive surgery with recovery lasting 8+ weeks. Despite the misfortune of the situation, as her new parents, we will ensure that Zelda receives all of the care she needs, including the surgery (TPLO) to repair her left CCL which she is scheduled to have on Tuesday 11/25/25 at Animal Surgical Center in Oceanside, NY. Her surgery will cost $6,000 which is undoubtedly a significant amount when very unexpected. Although the shelter was informed of the discrepancy in her medical history and updated diagnosis, they have refused to provide any support or resolution. Additionally, our pet insurance policy has a 6 month waiting period for cruciate ligament events so identification of this issue within the first 6 months of the new policy makes it pre-existing. With this, we are hoping to raise some funds to put towards Zelda's surgery so we can continue to provide all of the care she will need and very much deserves.
