Help Zawose Queens Overcome Deportation and Touring Losses
Donation protected
We urgently need your help to support the Zawose Queens, an extraordinary Tanzanian musical group making history as the first front-women and band leaders from their tribe. They were recently deported from the UK to Paris due to a visa misunderstanding. Although no laws were broken, this incident has left them with substantial financial losses, including unforeseen travel/ accommodation costs and touring losses as well as being a deeply distressing experience.
The Zawose Queens have already made an incredible mark on the music world, performing a televised set at Glastonbury and headlining major festival stages. Their talent and cultural significance have earned them the backing of Real World Records, mainstream press & radio and prominent booking agents and promoters. However, this incident threatens their ability to continue sharing their unique and vital artistry.
What Happened
While re-entering the UK for the third time on their current tour, the Zawose Queens encountered visa-related complications that resulted in a deportation to Paris and separation from their manager/ translator. They had to stay in a detention centre and were deported with no access to money or phones that work in the EU. An experience no one should have to go through. This sudden turn of events caused significant unplanned expenses, including flight changes, touring losses and accommodation costs after losing their base at producer Tom Excell’s home. These disrupted plans have placed a huge financial burden on this new project in its very first year.
Why It Matters
The Zawose Queens are more than just a musical group; they are cultural pioneers. Their music showcases the rich traditions of their Tanzanian heritage while amplifying the voices of women in a community where solo opportunities for women are rare. Their story is one of resilience, innovation, and hope.
This incident is a major blow, but we cannot let it derail their journey. The world needs their music, and they deserve the opportunity to share it.
