Help Zara Recover from Severe Anemia
Donation protected
We took our sweet girl Zara to the emergency vet on Friday night, 6/6/25. Since Thursday, 6/5, she was not acting like herself. She was very lethargic and barely eating.
At the vet, we found out she had a slight fever and was also severely anemic. She needed to stay overnight and receive a blood transfusion. What we thought would be a one-night stay turned out to be a 4-day stay. After the first infusion, her blood levels dropped again. This happened a couple more times, so she needed more blood transfusions on top of blood work, ultrasounds, x-rays, and other tests. It took a couple of days to find out what was causing her to be anemic. We finally received a diagnosis: Whipworm. She has a parasitic infection.
She finally came to a stable status, maintained her blood levels, and was able to come home on 6/11. We knew that the bill would be high, but this is beyond what we imagined and has put us in a difficult place. We wanted to do everything to save our baby. If you are called and are able to donate, we greatly appreciate your kindness. If you are called to send healing energy and prayers, those are also much appreciated. Thank you, everyone!
With love,
Mary Walker, Sean Walker, Ania Alonso
Update 6/16/25: We unfortunately had to make the extremely difficult decision to put our Zara to sleep. She had improved a bit, but started to decline again yesterday afternoon. We took her to the vet this morning and we had exhausted all our options. Her bone marrow was no longer producing red blood cells. We will miss our sweet girl forever and we are so grateful and for all the support we have received.
