Help Zane Get The Help He Needs
Donation protected
If you have met Zane you know that he is a silly, fun-loving guy who has overcome many challenges to be where he is today. Over the last few months, he has been struggling with his mental health. Since New Year's, Zane has attempted to commit suicide twice where he ended up in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and then in a stay at Avera Behavioral Health. Looking back, we feel there was a first attempt where he took enough pills to make himself lethargic, but not enough to do anything else. He is currently at his third stay at Avera Behavioral waiting on a opening at HSC in Yankton.
The state of healthcare in this country is abysmal, and mental health care is in worse shape than the overall healtcare system is. Scott and Anna have good insurance but in the USA, we like to blame everything on mental health disorders and don't want to fund treatment for them. Profits over people hurt us all.
Right now, they are looking the bills coming in from an ambulance ride, the ER and PICU stays, and the cost of multiple stays at Avera Behavioral. When Zane transfers to HSC, they will have a daily co-pay of $84. We know he will be there for at least two weeks but more time is likely. Anna has used up all of her PTO for the time she was at the hospital, care plan meetings, and meetings to address his IEP at school. Scott and Anna are proud people who work hard. They hate having to ask for help but they know that for Zane to get better, it will cost them so much money that they don't have.
