In 2016, exactly 7 years ago today (9/29/16), I rescued a golden retriever from a bad situation. Today, Zander is now an almost 8 year old 103 lb happy, and otherwise healthy big boy. He is adored by everyone he meets and he is always sure to give it back 10-fold, but the most overjoyed to be loved by him is me, his mom.
Shortly after rescuing Zander, I was inspired to dedicate my life to animal rescue and I went on to become a Senior Animal Cruelty Investigator for the county we live in. In my sometimes beautiful/sometimes heartbreaking career, I have helped countless animals from cruelty and disaster situations, and I truly love helping others with very fiber of my being. Despite much hesitation and having to swallow my pride, I'm now reaching out for help, for the love of my best friend.
Unexpectedly, this Saturday I found Zander struggling to breathe after a short romp around with his little sister (my 2nd rescued golden, Zena). He was immediately transported to Blue Pearl Emergency Hospital and was diagnosed with Aspiration Pneumonia (now believed to be due to underlying laryngeal paralysis). Two days later, he was transferred from Blue Pearl to Florida Veterinary Referral Center. Since being admitted, he is still 100% dependent on receiving oxygen and his recovery has been extremely slow, resulting in a hospital bill of $10,102.24 (in less than 5 days). I fully anticipate this amount to climb with continued care and a possible surgery to correct his suspected LP after his recovery from his Aspiration Pneumonia. After spending 5 grueling days in the hospital, Zander was finally approved by his veterinarian to continue his recovery at home with me, provided he remains hooked up to oxygen, receive oral medications, and would require 24 hour supervision.
With the help of his beloved long-time (now retired) Veterinarian, Dr. Blum, his nephew Anthony, and a dear family friend, Larry Barnhart, I was able to secure an Oxygen Concentrator to allow me to bring him home. For the time being, Zander's little sister Zena is under the care of my incredible mother because Zena is absolutely infatuated with Zander and I'm honestly afraid she would smother him being a 1 year old pup. Until Zander's condition improves, I am currently unable to go to work as I remain by his side in order to closely monitor and support him. Asking for help in any capacity is not easy for me, but I’m at the point where I am completely depleted of the funds I set aside in the case of an emergency. If anyone finds it in their hearts to help us during Zander’s recovery, it would be appreciated beyond words.
*I understand a lot of scammers are taking advantage of cases like this, so for the sake of transparency, I am more than happy to provide the current hospital invoices which total $10,102.84 upon any request.
