Help Zander Breathe Easier with Vacuum Bell

My son Zander is a bright and active 13-year-old who has always wanted to keep up with his friends, whether it’s running, jumping, or swimming. Unfortunately, Zander has a severe case of Pectus Excavatum, also known as funnel chest, which causes his sternum to be deeply recessed and twisted—a condition called sternal torsion. This deformity compresses his heart and lungs, making it difficult and painful for him to breathe deeply, especially during exercise or even while sleeping. As a result, Zander has missed out on many of the activities he loves and has struggled with growth and stamina.

After consulting with specialists, we learned that a device called a Vacuum Bell, combined with physical therapy, could help gently pull Zander’s sternum away from his heart and lungs. This non-invasive therapy is most effective while Zander is still growing and his chest wall is pliable. Unfortunately, our insurance will not cover the cost of the Vacuum Bell, which must be purchased from Germany. Without this device, Zander may face a highly invasive surgery in the future to correct his condition. Because of the severity and sternal torsion, Zander is not likely a candidate for the less invasive Nuss Procedure. If surgery becomes necessary, he would have to undergo the much more invasive Ravitch Procedure.

We have completed all the necessary medical appointments and are scheduled to start physical therapy at the end of June. Now, we just need help to purchase the Vacuum Bell & begin treatment as soon as possible.
