In June of last year, I began to notice strange health issues. It started with my left thumb going numb, but over the last year the problem progressed. At this time, both my arms and legs are very weak, my balance and coordination are severely affected, and I have regular tremors in all of my limbs. I walk extremely slow and only with the help of a cane for support. Luckily, I was hired as a 6th grade teacher in February and was able to see doctors and have a series of tests run. The doctors found that I have two herniated disks between my 5/6 and 6/7 vertebrae applying pressure to my spinal cord and progressively reducing my mobility and control. I feel fortunate because this is an operable condition! However, my teaching position is temporary and my contract ends on May 22, meaning my insurance coverage ends on May 31. My surgery is scheduled for May 26th, but recovery is estimated for between six and ten weeks.
The funds will pay for extended COBRA insurance, living expenses during recovery, and any other unforeseen expenses. People who know me know that I am a very stoic person and don't ask for help. I usually am very self-reliant and am now seeing how serious this situation could become. Any support you can offer will help me focus on healing and getting back to the classroom as soon as possible. Thank you for reading my story and considering a donation.
