Let's support Yvonne as she battles cancer
Donation protected
Yvonne, her husband and their 9 year old son were hiking on Sunday September 29th, 2019 when they noticed Yvonne looked like she was having a stroke. She lost movement of the right side of her body and she couldn’t speak. Her husband, Sean, called 911 from the mountain top and they took her by helicopter to Mission Hospital thinking she was having a stroke. They quickly realized she was suffering from multiple seizures and she was immediately placed in a medically induced coma. After several scans, an MRI revealed that she had a brain tumor sitting on the left side of her brain. This was especially devastating news because they lost their daughter, Grace, almost four years ago to an aggressive form of cancer called Osteosarcoma. Grace battled this for almost 22 months before passing away at the age of 14.
On October 4th, Yvonne was transferred to HOAG in Newport Beach, CA. Thankfully, her surgeon successfully removed the tumor on Wednesday, October 9th, but the diagnosis that followed has devastated everyone that loves Yvonne. On October 14th, we learned that cancer had found this family again. Yvonne slowly woke up after being in a coma for almost 14 days. She is regaining strength and her Oncology team is working on her treatment plan, but needless to say this will be a long, long journey.
Yvonne has dedicated her life to cancer, an irony that is gut-wrenching. She was a single mom when Gracie was born, and while still in the hospital recovering from her birth, she was accepted into a CT program. She cared for Grace, went to school full-time, and put in her clinical hours for two years. She then worked at Gaston Memorial Hospital doing CT scans, which is where she met her wonderful husband, Sean. She scanned him for a shoulder injury and they both were instantly head over heels for each other! They married in 2006 and welcomed their son, Colin, in 2010. They were a happy family of four! Yvonne started working in Oncology doing CT scans soon after, up until Gracie's devastating diagnosis in 2014. Yvonne had to stop working and focus her time on caring for Gracie. Sean was able to continue working (thankfully he worked for a wonderful company that allowed him a lot of flexibility during this time). Gracie fought the hard fight for 22 months before going to heaven to be with the Lord. After Gracie's passing, Yvonne felt called to go into Radiation Therapy. She followed her calling, applied, and was accepted!
After graduating from Radiation Therapy school in May of 2017 their family moved to Irvine, CA for a fresh start. She worked at Mission Hospital before joining the HOAG family earlier this year. She says she takes great pleasure in pressing the button and knowing she is killing some cancer cells, but I think she is joking, she really wants to help people beat cancer. Yvonne is literally helping beat cancer EVERYDAY! Her life's mission has been, and will continue to be, to fight this ugly thing called Cancer. In honor of Grace, she also runs a non-profit: The Amazing Grace Foundation, https://www.theamazinggracefoundation.org/ to raise money for families fighting a pediatric Oncology diagnosis. Nobody draws a salary from the foundation, all donations go directly to families in need and research.
Sean has now had to go on short-term leave from work and is only receiving 66% of his salary. Yvonne will be out of work indefinitely. This family has suffered through so much.
This fund has been created to help Yvonne and her family by supporting her road to recovery and treatment . Please help out and support Yvonne by donating today. Anything helps and no donation is too small. We ask that you please also keep Yvonne and her family in your prayers. Thank you for your caring support and the power of community and prayer!
