Hello, my name is Yvonne. I’m a nurse, LVN of 33 years and newly diagnosed with Dermatomyositis. This is a rare autoimmune disorder that has riddled my world physically, emotionally and financially. Initially, I was diagnosed with medication induced Lupus. While in emergency care for respiratory distress I was admitted to the hospital. After a biopsy, several CT scans with and without contrast, and several MRI’s I have been diagnosed with Dermatomyositis. That was the longest 19 days hospital stay of my life. I have to use a walker, cane and sometimes a rollator to help me walk because of the muscles weakness. Because I am self employed my insurance does not cover therapy outside of the hospital. I can’t afford home health care therapy and I could not afford the 45% co pay and up to $400 per day fee with $7500 out of pocket expenses. I was told by the discharge planners no rehabilitation would take me as a charity case. I was told by the hospital doctor because of the medication I’m required to take indefinitely is too expensive and is not cost effective for reimbursement for the rehab to admit me for treatment. I need help with cost of living please. I have applied for food stamps because I live with family to try to help in some way. My personal belongings are in storage which my family has paid for this month. If there are any PT /OT willing to treat for a few weeks, please let me know. I’m following the schedule the hospital regimen as best I can but I am still weak and have trouble with small task. Brushing my teeth, flossing my teeth, combing my hair, applying my ointment to my hands and elbow rashes are taxing efforts to say the least. I’m out of money and I’ve ask some friends and family. Some loved ones have helped and I appreciate everything everyone has contributed from the bottom of my heart but it’s not enough. My out of hospital doctors appointment is $120 for primary care provider, & $250 for one of 3 specialist, equipment and medication over the counter this month $350 which includes a bariatric bedside commode and shower chair. At this point I’m don’t know what else to do but say please help me if you can, direct me to resources that you are aware of, but please do not shame me for asking for help. Never did I think I would go from being a caregiver to requesting assistance on the most basic level. Thank you for your attention and support in this matter.
