Help Yvette Rise Again After a Preventable Tragedy
Donation protected
On May 13, 2025, Yvette, a vibrant 22-year-old law student and musician, stepped into a Massachusetts social gathering filled with promise. She had just arrived from Hong Kong, where she lives, for a prestigious exchange program, her future bright with dreams of justice and music. In an instant, those dreams were engulfed in flames when Everclear, a 190-proof alcohol, ignited in a catastrophic fire. The scars Yvette now carries, physical and emotional, are a lifelong reminder of that day, visible in every mirror, job interview, or summer moment at the beach. We’re reaching out to ask for your support to help Yvette rebuild her life.
What Is Everclear, and Why Did This Happen?
Everclear is a 95% ethanol grain alcohol, so potent that a single spark can trigger an explosion. Marketed for cocktails and DIY projects like candle fuel, its flash point is below room temperature, making it dangerously flammable. In 2018, Luxco, Everclear’s maker, removed extensive and critical warnings from its bottles that read: “CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY TO OPEN FLAME. CONTENTS MAY IGNITE OR EXPLODE.” They kept these warnings on other, identical 190-proof products, prioritizing aesthetics and profits over safety. Their social media still promotes Everclear for risky uses, burying warnings in nearly invisible fine print.
Yvette’s accident, captured in a graphic video we’ve chosen not to share here due to its distressing nature, shows young people caught in flames, a preventable tragedy. Luxco knew the risks but left users, like those who poured Everclear at the gathering, to face blame, lawsuits, and crushing guilt. Friends and family who witnessed the fire carry trauma from screams they can’t unhear. Yvette’s scars, like those of Makenna DeMoneyl a college senior whose “…And Still I Rise” tattoo is now scarred in a similar New York incidentl are a cruel irony: Luxco’s “invisible” warnings have made her injuries permanently visible.
Yvette’s Journey Ahead
Yvette’s spirit is unbroken, but her road to recovery is long. She faces multiple surgeries, skin grafts, physical therapy, and counseling to cope with the emotional toll. These treatments come with staggering medical bills, and her studies and music career are on hold. Every day, she navigates the pain of scars that draw stares and questions, a constant reminder of a corporation’s negligence. Yet, Yvette is determined to rise, just as she always has, with your help.
A Pattern of Pain
Yvette isn’t alone. Makenna, in a New York ICU, fights to recover (support her at https://www.gofundme.com/f/lets-support-makennas-recovery). Abigael Hance-Briscoe and Dustin Johnson in Dallas, burned in a flaming cocktail explosion at a bar now bankrupt from lawsuits, share this burden (https://tinyurl.com/y33h6yzu). These tragedies stem from the same root: Luxco’s reckless marketing, which fuels fires and destroys lives, leaving businesses and communities in ruins.
How You Can Help
Your donation, no matter the size, will help cover Yvette’s medical expenses, therapy, and living costs as she rebuilds. If you can’t donate, sharing this campaign raises awareness about Everclear’s dangers and demands accountability from companies like Luxco. Every contribution brings Yvette closer to healing and sends a message: no one else should suffer because profits were valued over safety.
Join us in supporting Yvette’s recovery. Together, we can help her rise again and shine as the brilliant, talented woman she is.
