We’d like to introduce you to Marthen, Yustina, and their 5 children.

Until a year ago Marthen and Yustina had a lovely and busy life in Sumba, an Indonesian island about 1.5 hours flight from Bali. Marthen worked at a car rental business and Yustina was a teacher. Unfortunately, Yustina was given expired birth control and became pregnant with their fifth child. When Yustina was 4 months into her fifth pregnancy, she noticed a lump in her breast, and after examination Yustina was diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer. The doctors suggested she go to Bali to seek treatment not available on her home island of Sumba.

 Due to the aggressive nature of the cancer, she was given 2 rounds of chemotherapy at 7 months pregnant which weakened her body significantly. Thankfully, shortly afterwards she gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby named Ayu Louise via Caesarean section. Yustina was weak and ill and had lost a lot of blood - the doctors were very concerned about her condition, however she was, and remains to be, strong and determined.

 Yustina has since had 6 rounds of Chemotherapy, a Masectomy and started radiation in December 2023. Marthen, Yustina and baby Ayu are living in a Cancer Hospice. He has found a part time night job 2 nights a week and in the day cares for his wife and looks after the baby.

Sadly no one has been able to support their other four children who are living in Sumba with very limited supervision. They do not have access to nutritious food and clean drinking water. They are unable to get to and from school. In order to cook they must collect firewood. Their ages are 4, 9, 11 and 14. Their small home has fallen into disarray and the situation is now dire.

 At first we did not know how long Marthen & Yustina would need to be in Bali. Originally it was thought to be a short time, but as she is still undergoing lifesaving treatment the doctors are still suggesting she stays in Bali. We urgently need to bring this family back together so they can live a somewhat normal life in Bali, while Yustina completes her treatment and beats this cancer.

 Marthen & Yustina desperately need funds to make this happen – to rent a couple of rooms to call a family home, to ensure that all family members have a safe environment and nutritious food, that their children can return to having parental love and guidance. And in the long term, to be able to return to Sumba, to fix their bamboo home and restart their lives and careers.
