Yulia is a mother from Ukraine who spent 6 months searching for her son, Alexander (Sasha), from abroad. When she finally came to Toronto, she found him in a detention center, in a serious mental health crisis.
She was able to release him on $1,000 bail, but his condition continued to deteriorate. He became unstable and sometimes violent, and in December, Yulia had to call the police for her own safety. Since then, he has been back in detention, where he remains today, without proper medical evaluation or treatment.
Yulia says she no longer recognizes her son. At times, Sasha does not speak to her or treats her like a stranger. He appears to be experiencing severe mental health symptoms, but he has no diagnosis, no treatment, and no documents, as all his papers were lost.
Yulia is alone in Canada. She has no family support here and speaks very limited English. She is trying to navigate the legal, healthcare, and police systems on her own, with very little guidance. She currently relies on legal aid, but progress has been slow, and her son has been in detention for months with no clear timeline.
She also has a teenage son in Ukraine, whom she had to leave behind with relatives.
Yulia is doing what she can to survive - taking on small cleaning jobs - but she is on the brink of homelessness and relies heavily on volunteer support.
She urgently needs help:
- To cover basic living expenses
- To access legal support and advocacy
- To navigate the healthcare system and get her son proper medical care
Without medical help, she cannot convince her son to restore his documents. Without documents, he cannot access medical care - it’s a vicious cycle, and she feels completely stuck.
Yulia came to Canada to find her son. Now she is fighting to help him - completely alone. Please consider donating or sharing this campaign. Your support can help Yulia stabilize her situation and get her son the care he urgently needs.
