Help young Peruvian scientists train abroad!!! (Abajo en Español)

Hi, my name is Rossana Maguiña. I am a voluntering member of the Research Experience for Peruvian Undergraduates Program (REPU Program). This year, we selected seven brilliant young Peruvian scientists to receive training in scientific internships abroad. I created this crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to support the Ecology REPU (ecoREPU) students 2024.

I will tell you why your support is needed to give the ecoREPU students this life-changing experience. Peruvian science has barely any support, access to cutting-edge technology and infrastructure is rare, and young scientists struggle to pursue careers in science. This results in many bright students abandoning their dreams of becoming scientists. To help them, a small group of Peruvian scientists created the REPU program in 2007. REPU creates 12-week research-internships for Peruvian undergraduates in the biomedical sciences, chemistry, physics, ecology, and nano-engineering, in institutions outside of Peru. It is organized by Peruvian postdoctoral scientists and graduate students at different universities around the world who volunteer to advance science in Peru and Latin America. REPU and its (over 100) volunteers help the students find host labs and universities, secure housing, provide mentorship to prepare the students for a graduate experience abroad, and welcome the students to a growing network of Peruvian scientists worldwide. I want to help our selected students to get closer to doing their internships. In January 2024, our students are traveling to Sweden and The United States, where they need about $1000 per month to afford basic living expenses. I'd love to help our students to cover their expenses for one month. Thus, this crowdfunding goal is $8000. Please, help me with any size contribution. Your support will be used to cover our students’ expenses such as, housing, health insurance, groceries, and local transportation.

Here is more about me! I am a Peruvian scientist. Currently, I hold a Ph.D. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I work as a researcher for the Stengl Lost Pines Biological Station from The University of Texas at Austin. I have been the leader of ecoREPU from 2016 to 2022, and currently I serve as mentor for our students. I am extremely passionate and committed to this program. I have my own REPU story. In 2009, I wanted to apply to the REPU Program but there was no option to apply for a research internship in ecology... So, I left thinking that the lack of equal opportunities for all the students interested in this program was unfair. Back then, it never crossed my mind that 7 years later (2016) it was going to be ME who would help REPU to open the research line of ecology called ecoREPU. Since its opening, the ecoREPU line has had over 20 volunteers and we had 17 students doing abroad internships in ecology (in the US, Canada, Sweden, and Germany!).

Ayuda a jóvenes científicos peruanos a formarse en el extranjero!!!

Hola mi nombre es Rossana Maguiña. Soy miembro voluntario del Programa Experiencia de Investigación para Estudiantes Peruanos (Programa REPU). Este año seleccionamos siete jóvenes científicos peruanos brillantes para recibir capacitación en una pasantía de investigación en el extranjero. Creé esta campaña de crowdfunding para recaudar fondos para apoyar a estos estudiantes de ecoREPU 2023.

Te diré por qué se necesita tu apoyo para brindarles a los estudiantes de ecoREPU esta experiencia que les cambiará la vida. La ciencia peruana apenas tiene apoyo, el acceso a tecnología e infraestructura de punta es raro, y los jóvenes científicos luchan por seguir carreras científicas. Esto da como resultado que muchos estudiantes brillantes abandonen sus sueños de convertirse en científicos. Para ayudar a los estudiantes peruanos, un pequeño grupo de científicos peruanos creó el programa REPU en 2007. REPU organiza pasantías de investigación de 12 semanas para estudiantes universitarios peruanos en ciencias biomédicas, química, física, ecología y nanoingeniería, en instituciones fuera de Perú. Está organizado por científicos peruanos posdoctorales y estudiantes de posgrado en diferentes universidades del mundo que se ofrecen como voluntarios para promover la ciencia en Perú y América Latina. REPU y sus (más de 100) voluntarios ayudan a los estudiantes a encontrar laboratorios y universidades anfitriones, alojamiento seguro, brindan tutoría para preparar a los estudiantes para una experiencia de posgrado en el extranjero y les dan la bienvenida a una red creciente de científicos peruanos en todo el mundo. Yo quiero ayudar a nuestros estudiantes seleccionados a estar más cerca de hacer sus pasantías de investigación. En enero de 2024, nuestros estudiantes viajarán a Suecia y Estados Unidos, donde necesitan $1000 por mes para cubrir los gastos básicos de subsistencia. Hemos seleccionado 7 alumnos. Me encantaría ayudar a cada uno de ellos a cubrir sus gastos durante un mes. Por lo tanto, esta meta de financiación colectiva es de $ 8000. Por favor, ayúdenme con cualquier tamaño de contribución. ¡Aquí hay más sobre mí! Soy una científica peruana. Tengo un Ph.D. Ecología y Biología Evolutiva de la Universidad de California Santa Cruz. Actualmente trabajo como investigadora en la Estación Biológica Stengl Lost Pines de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Fui líder de ecoREPU durante 2016 a 2022. Ahora soy mentora de nuestros estudiantes. Tengo mi propia historia REPU. En el 2009 quise postular al Programa REPU pero no había opción de postular a una pasantía de investigación en ecología... Entonces, me fui pensando que la falta de igualdad de oportunidades para todos los estudiantes interesados en este programa era injusta. En ese entonces, nunca se me pasó por la cabeza que 7 años después (2016) iba a ser YO quien ayudaría a REPU a abrir la línea de investigación en ecología llamada ecoREPU. Desde su apertura, la línea ecoREPU ha contado con más de 20 voluntarios y tuvimos 17 estudiantes realizando pasantías de investigación en el exterior en ecología (en EEUU, Canadá, Suecia, y Alemania!).
